We're gonna need a truth and reconciliation commission and Nuremberg style trials to reckon with all of this evil, and any Dem candidate for office who shies away from a full reckoning in the name of "moving forward as a nation" can get well and truly fucked

I’m not saying they are lying, but I’m struck by how quickly people believe law enforcement that‘s become more and more compromised. Remember, when they claimed Kirk’s killer was trans? 🙃

This is ridiculous considering that native-born US citizens are far more likely to commit serious crimes than refugees.
The folks at @afghanevac.bsky.social have in hand a new USCIS directive which largely targets Afghan refugees who fled the Taliban in the wake of the U.S. withdrawal in 2021.

In case you needed a reminder that the most loathsome people in the world work for DHS.

Over 200 men were sent by Kristi Noem-in violation of a court order-to the CECOT prison for terrorists

She claimed they were criminals. In reality, most had no criminal records, and many had valid claims for asylum

They were tortured. Beaten. Sexually abused. Even shot.

The obvious problem is that by far most lone shooter incidents are done by native born US citizens
It didn’t even take 6 hours.

Yes. Obviously left wing parties do need to compromise with the electorate somewhat on issues of all stripes, but I don't think you can entirely take the social liberalism out of centre left politics and expect to be successful either electorally or in public policy terms

One of my favorite takes on this website by the Ball Knowers was that the year plus of cracking down on anti-genocide youth movements in this country, on campuses and otherwise, had no effects whatsoever on turnouts come November nor in general for mobilization etc. Goldfish levels of myopia.
I think @brendannyhan.bsky.social is exactly right in this piece, but I’d go one step further here. Elites very explicitly told young people to sit down and shut up. Society punished them for standing up for their beliefs, and targeted and vilified the organizers. Now we need need them.

In the place where I grew up, monolingualism in children is often interpreted as a sign of parental abuse or neglect.
Every time this goes around I'm surprised by how many monolingual English speakers think this is more embarrassing for the French philosopher lecturing in a foreign language than it is for all the dumb hicks in the room who couldn't work backwards from how French sounds and use context cues.
This path leads to chaos.

“Small countries must tiptoe around the sensibilities of big violent nuclear powers or else they’ll get what’s coming to them“ is a bizarre kind of brain worms that often passes itself off as anti-imperialism.

Nearly always said by people from nuclear power bully countries like the US or Russia!
Now consider that if Ireland continues to more aggressively align themselves with western interests (which have a positively amazing record of respecting national sovreignty) what would an opposing power feel the need to do to that subordinate state?

In Vitale’s book, he writes: “The problem is not police training, police diversity, or police methods. The problem is the dramatic and unprecedented expansion and intensity of policing in the last 40 years, a fundamental shift in the role of police in society. The problem is policing itself.”

This is the correct take. Stewing in white supremacist propaganda is bad for your thinking. And if think you are so savvy that it won’t impact you, you are the exact kind of mark they are slowly converting (I’m looking at you, centrist pundits).
It’s really funny how a generation will roll its eyes at parents who watch Fox News but doesn’t see why being immersed in Twitter is having the same effect. Lots of serious people show up on Fox News too but that shouldn’t be your primary source on the news.

So a paradox I've observed living in Thailand is it is simultaneously one of the most nationalist countries in existence *and* a deeply multi-ethnic and multi-religious society

I'm not a fan of nationalism, think it should not be the mode of organizing the world, but just factually he is incorrect

Quickly, I learned that this kind of masculinity was a scam that was being used to control me, steal my joy, and my freedom on top of humiliating and oppressing women. No thanks.
So many men go through life like that. You can play poker because it's right-coded, you can't enjoy fruity alcoholic drinks because they're women-coded, you can't lick an ice cream cone because it's gay-coded. All day, every day, choosing and judging things based on coding for narrow norms.

As @gregsargent.bsky.social points out, Trump *has* given illegal orders.

But he’s also so allergic to democratic ideals that the very idea of a military (or any other institution) that serves the people rather than the ruler is totally illegible and incomprehensible to him.
