Yeah Ireland doesn’t automatically need to mirror Estonia’s defence posture when we thankfully don’t have the same threat profile they do.

Similarly we’re in a poor position to lecture other European countries facing serious military threats on the virtues of neutrality or low defence budgets.
"Ireland would think differently about Russia if they were where Estonia is!". Yeah probably. Different things are different. I don't think Poland worries much about the good Friday agreement to be honest.

Ukraine has already repeatedly stated they’re willing to implement an *unconditional* ceasefire at any time as soon as Russia agrees.

They will never sign some formal peace deal that allows the world to move on without ironclad security guarantees. Complete waste of time.
According to Politico, the US insists a peace deal must come first before any talks on long-term security guarantees for Ukraine. Senator Marco Rubio has reportedly told European partners that Trump is open to future security discussions, but only after an agreement to end the war is signed.

Finally it’s time to try some right wing ideas for a change 👏

My carefully considered, nuanced and balanced policy view is that we should tax gambling profits, including sports betting, at like 98% and one executive's kidney per quarter.

I'm not sure having every UK mainstreet be three quarters Ladbrokes is good, actually.

Yes, quite. Remember when the media (even respectable outlets, like FT) uncritically parroted the narrative that Witkoff allegedly 'confronted' Netanyahu and 'demanded' a ceasefire? Twice, once for each ceasefire? And yet the current ceasefire is wildly far away from an actual cease of fire?
Makes me wonder what happened behind the scenes with the Gaza deal.

I just refuse to believe anyone is giving me lots of great deals during peak Christmas shopping time. Why offer loads of discounts when consumer demand is through the roof!
Like, if we’re going to import this Black Friday discount phenomenon, can we at least mark it on Black Friday, which is supposed to be the Friday after U.S. Thanksgiving

Half the offers are done and Cyber Monday is still only a glint in our minds’ eyes

Legitimate change to consumer law: reintroduce the clause where a ‘discounted’ price can only be advertised if the previous ‘higher’ price was charged for a minimum period of time, e.g. 30 days of previous 90

While they’re at it:
Ban ‘Black Friday’ promotions ending before Black Friday occurs

“Small countries must tiptoe around the sensibilities of big violent nuclear powers or else they’ll get what’s coming to them“ is a bizarre kind of brain worms that often passes itself off as anti-imperialism.

Nearly always said by people from nuclear power bully countries like the US or Russia!
Now consider that if Ireland continues to more aggressively align themselves with western interests (which have a positively amazing record of respecting national sovreignty) what would an opposing power feel the need to do to that subordinate state?

Stiff competition but Vance is probably the worst fascist goblin in the WH rn.

Smarter than opportunistic idiots like Witkoff and more ideological and actively evil than Trump.

And he wraps all his smug viciousness in this faux ”well now good sir” civility that’s sooo hateable.
Makes you wonder what Vance will say if Trump orders a US military attack on Venezuela

I think it’s worth saying that assuming a ceasefire in place is reached in Ukraine—like with Israel and HAMAS in Gaza—it’ll merely be a temporary suspension in fighting that doesn’t resolve core tensions that created the conflict.

Russia isn’t going to stop wanting to erase Ukrainian sovereignty.

We can only read tea leaves rn but this reads much more like soft launching US abandonment than kite flying a really bad deal imo.

Only Ukrainians can make that choice but I con’t see the current list of concessions leading anywhere.

I find a lot of Labour and SocDem contributions on Mercosur kind of annoying, because they’ll rightly question environmental standards and deforestation in Brazil, but then turn around and downplay / ignore domestic deforestation and beef farming status quo (the largest source of Irish emissions!!).

Yeah it’s either hard US security guarantees real enough for Ukraine to trust them (would take way more than trust me bro, boots on the ground or close to it), or yet another token promise which Ukraine / Europe will obviously reject.
One reason (of several) I'm sceptical of the Witkoff deal is that it's apparently contingent on independent US security guarantees and that's such a colossal reversal of US policy that I struggle to see how it survives contact with political reality.

Some of them have that forced yank corporate enthusiasm that’s just like nails on chalkboard to my Irish ears.
