All that said, I am generally in favor of "pies" as a category of food.
I try to avoid "food discourse," but I feel compelled to point out that a homemade key lime pie is glorious.

Pecan pie is the best.
Apple pie is bad. This is not really debatable. So is key lime pie, while we’re on the topic. Pecan pie is the 🐐 tho.

The part in my book where French officers decided their programs worked despite all evidence to the contrary and it was actually just their subordinates' fault if thing didn't turn out right really only started to make sense to me when I began working more closely with the university administration

It's not just the scrapping of structures that were considered cornerstones of "Western Values" just a few years ago; it's not even that the people scrapping them are the same sort of people who bray about Western Values; it's the casualness, the unseriousness about *their own* Most Serious Beliefs

American Catholics, behold your new leader, Antipope Eyeliner I!
“In these lectures, Thiel doesn’t just flirt with the apocalyptic. He goes all in — openly discussing the Antichrist, naming Pope Leo XIV as a potential manifestation of that figure, and, most disturbingly, advising JD Vance to ignore the pope on moral matters altogether.”
In newly leaked audio, Peter Thiel admits he urged JD Vance to ignore Pope Leo XIV on moral questions — including the ethical development of AI.

He goes even further, branding Leo “the woke American pope” and suggesting he’s a tool of the Antichrist.

The problem with this article is they asked too many lawyers and not enough historians.

As a historian, I'd say the legality of Trump's immunity and pardons depends on how he leaves office.

At 40 over 55 approval? He's immune.

At 25 over 65? He's probably not immune & self-pardons aren't legal.

Yes, HID headlights are very bright but the bigger problem is the proliferation of gargantuan vehicles with 5’+ hood heights so that if you’re driving a normal sized car their headlights are at your eye level rather than seat level like they’re supposed to be.

Our elite media sure isn't beating the accusation that they're corrupt and out-of-touch.
I regret to inform you there is more Olivia Newzzi: the print VF will feature a nude portrait by artist Isabelle Brourman that is also destined for Art Basel Miami Beach. Notably, its inclusion appears be a surprise to VF staff. VF looking worse and worse here. www.artnews.com/art-news/new...

I don't think we ponder enough how weird it is that a lot of centrists pundits spend a lot of their time telling left-of-center Americans that "good citizenship" involves obfuscating or even lying about their political views.

I read it, and it makes the classic error of conflating politicians and Democratic aligned non-politicians.

I'm not convinced that columns chastising non-politicians to not say certain things they believe to be true is a politically viable strategy.
Sure, man.

BREAKING NEWS FROM THE PAPER OF RECORD: YOUTHS TUNING OUT TEACHER; BORED BY CLASS. RECESS AND LUNCH OUTPERFORM HISTORY
An increase in ADHD after No Child Left Behind is not evidence — it's correlational and diagnoses have been rising for decades.

"Kids don't like school!" also isn't evidence. Kids have always disliked school. Without a comparison to previous cohorts this is meaningless.

The thing about Hunter S. Thompson is he was the product of a fairly unique moment, and the attempt to become the modern HST is misguided. It's akin to trying to become the modern Abbie Hoffman.
just read a piece calling Nuzzi a "modern day political version of Hunter S. Thompson" and I think I need to log off

This article on elite media that lives rent free in my mind.

So many layers of what indicates about Chuck Todd and his messed up views.

"Chuck Todd: I don't allow my kids 'to say anything negative, ever, about the president.'"

I was just talking in class on Thursday about the shift over the last 25-50 years to the presidency asserting the power to make war with complete discretion and how that's been increasingly accepted by the country at large, especially media and political elites.
no one has even bothered trying to convince us there’s a threat from Venezuela. no weapons of mass destruction. nothing. just a war of choice because why not.
US operations against Venezuela to begin within days.

Covert ops the first move.

I honestly am floored that we still have people clinging to the "Trump the populist" and/or "the GOP is now a workers' party" narratives.

And in many cases writing professionally about politics!

it's all this bullshit effort to make trump seem savvy and consistent, when he's just a shithead who is easily rolled.
Every article by a 'savvy' political analyst reads like a focus group transcript with a low-information voter.

it's important to remember that the past is a different place with different moral frameworks like for example if a Spanish royal from the 1500s was to learn that we had a Columbus Day they would probably think there was something deeply wrong with our society, some kind of foundational moral rot
there is like an *exact* correspondence to this in columbus’s logs where he meets the taino and says ‘they’re so friendly, would make great slaves’ and las casas appends a comment along the lines of ‘look at this, you could not ask for better proof of what an incredibly sick fuckhead columbus was’
