Remember: The richest 1% evade over $160 billion in taxes every year.

That amount would fund SNAP for a year with money to spare.

Ask yourself who the real freeloaders are.

Remember: The concentration of wealth in the hands of a few isn't just bad for our economy. It's corrosive to our democracy.

When the wealthy and well-connected control our political system, regular people don't have a voice.

The result? The demagoguery and corruption we're seeing now.

oh my fucking god he is 100% confusing cadillac insurance plans with people buying cadillacs

"and it's gonna be locked so they can't go out and buy, uh, a cadillac, they can go out and buy health insurance"
Trump on healthcare: "I've had personal talks with some Democrats about paying large amounts of dollars back to the people. This was my idea ... why don't we just pay this money directly to the people of our country and let them buy their own health insurance?"

And grown folks should not be interested! A teenager is not "fully baked." Not physically. Not emotionally. Not intellectually. A youth is allowed to have sexual thoughts and feelings. Normal adults should be turned-off by the expression of them. But our culture does not normalize this.

Health Canada convened an independent expert advisory group in 2020 to provide guidance on safer supply. Health Canada heavily redacted its final report, but unredacted version obtained by CBC shows the expert group said drug crisis is driven by prohibition and recommended expansion of safer supply

I'm seeing people wonder why ICE is going after Charlotte.

ICE has been at war with Charlotte's sheriff ever since he won in 2018.

We'd covered this at Bolts back in the day; this quote is from that sheriff:
“When the 8 African American sheriffs took over the largest counties in North Carolina, it became a threat to the good ol’ boy system,” says the sheriff of Charlotte. These new sheriffs broke ties with ICE.

But GOP lawmakers cracked down this week, overbidding the governor’s veto to adopt this law:
North Carolina GOP Is Cracking Down on the Black Sheriffs Who Stood Up to ICE
Boosted by new supermajorities, Republicans are closing in on legislation to mandate more collaboration with ICE and preempt local policies hard-won by immigrants’ rights advocates.

He was living with a former student when he came on to me.

He married another student after he was done with me.

A few years later, another student reached out to me after he manipulated her into bed to try to sort how he was abusing power non-stop

I was in a relationship for a time with a professor I had in undergraduate who was 37 when he came on to me at 19.

It had an abusive power dynamic from the start that eventually morphed into actual physical abuse.

It cost him his tenure track position, so he transferred to another uni where he
Sometimes I think about the time that I ran into a senior physicist on the street with a woman who was much younger than him and who I learned later had been an undergraduate in his department just the year before and was, at the time, a grad student at his university

Someone faved this, and it reminded me of a conversation between my (very activist) cousin and my (lifelong political) uncle. She said, "You're an elder now. It is your responsibility to pass on your knowledge." I liked that framing. It's the opposite of abdication.
1000%. I've been hearing, "the youth will fix it!" since I was one of the youth. it's an abdication of responsibility.

Checking in on this: the school board member who opposed the ban on trans athletes, and who was then challenged by the parent of the HS girl who'd complained, won reelection, 60 to 40%.
I'd totally missed this:

In Tumwater, WA, a HS student complained about a trans basketball player. Then, the local school board passed a resolution to ban trans girls from girl sports.

Now, the mother of that student is running against the sole school board member to vote against the resolution.

I'm not trying to be mean, but racists who believe Trump betrayed them by being a child molester are not going to embrace the Democratic Party without forcing that party to embrace racism. And the people gained would in no way make up for those lost.
