Welp, guess I need a pinned post. I write stuff, I have a Patreon, I edit freelance, and here's the thread about the time I started an antifascist hallway riot in the third grade. Raise a jelly nougat to Granddad!
Okay, so at the request of the lovely @trance.bsky.social , I'm going to tell a story about what happens when a shitty person is "just joking", and then discovers there are consequences.

AKA That Time Kat Started An Antifascist Hallway Riot In The Third Grade.

Grab your beverage of choice.
Been having flashbacks all day to the "how to sell your writing" seminar I was required to attend in grad school. At least half of it was spent telling women they had to be "jacket photo ready" at all times because "you have to be good-looking enough to sell books." This was 2007ish.
it was I think better when there were ways for people who hate being on screen to make a creative living

I don’t think it’s an improvement that we’re creating a culture where everyone creative also has to be hot

it is INCREDIBLY fucked up that we’re trying to make writers look hot on camera. every writer i know is like “please leave me in the same clothes i’ve been wearing all week that are covered in crumbs i will shower after my deadline” they should not be on tiktok

I've kept a journal since 2006, specifically for ideas I was too busy to use because I was already using OTHER ideas. I will let the world have that journal for precisely Pay All Creatives A Healthy Salary Forever. That's even cheaper than the lie machine!

The "world's idea machine" is humanity.

America, you have spoken loud and clear: You do not like AI. But what if AI is the way to restart the world’s idea machine?
We’re running out of good ideas. AI might be how we find new ones.
What if the best use of AI is restarting the world’s idea machine?

Another way to restart the world’s idea machine is to restore funding and grants to universities, researchers, and artists.

Rob Reiner either made your favorite movie, or made somebody you know’s favorite movie. If you’re a Californian, he’s also part of the reason you or your friends can get married. He has changed more lives for the better than this asshole commenting on him ever did.

I think the fundamental gap here is that non-creative people think that creative people make things for the end product, when in fact it’s the act of creation and not the end point that makes it worthwhile.
I have grown to believe that excessive wealth does something to your brain that is analogous to a serious head injury

With this piece of bread on the ground in Ottawa, Canada and the one below in Perth, Australia, @drstip.bsky.social and I have successfully created an Earth sandwich.

The hot dog vs sandwich debate is concluded.

If the Earth is sandwiched, everything is a sandwich.

HAPPY EARTH SANDWICH DAY!

On the subject of what I just reposted: I grew up being told that I would not be able to get healthcare after a certain age because I was born with a "preexisting condition" (craniosynostosis). Even though, post-surgery, I would either live to 100 without complications or randomly drop dead someday.

The ACA isn't just "health care for people who don't have a conventional employer." It also disallows something that was incredibly common 20 years ago, which I fear is getting lost to generational memory: insurance companies could deny you health care for essentially any previous health problem.
I'm dubious about Amazon's commitment to keeping pre-existing conditions a thing of the past.

Just had my first "You're wearing a mask indoors. Are you sick? If you're sick, why are you here?" interaction of the season. While everyone else at the table was talking about how everyone they know is sick and it's so, so weird.

(I am not sick. I just never had a good reason to stop masking.)

A lovely thread.
It’s the first night of Hanukkah and the world seems like a very dark place. But we can bring light to the darkness. We can fight for each other and make goodness, love, and community shine through.

Show me your menorahs and let’s light up the timeline!

Very important addition re: measles! Get your titers checked even if you know you got your shots as a kid. And if you don't know, or your immunity has waned, GET. YOUR. JABS.

(This message does not apply to immunocompromised people. We are doing this to help protect you. Bear hugs.)
Also even if you've checked your baby book for mom's vaccine schedule proof, Gen X, get your titers checked! Got mine checked on a whim and I was absolutely 💯 not immune to measles or rubella anymore!

Walgreens: (possibly) an easy place to get yer jabs!
I just included it when I scheduled my vaccines this year at Walgreens, they didn't require any documentation on titers or an order. No charge to me & got a coupon for 20% off my next visit. Win-win! Sadly, you do need an order for monkey pox (which covers smallpox as well) or i'd've done that too!

Do I know any US crocheters/knitters with working hands who would be interested in a craft trade?

I have a skein of yarn that was going to be a hat. I have been ordered not to crochet until my hand heals. My sewing machine still works, and I'll swap you Cool Thing Sewed for Large Head Warm.

If you need a measles jab in the US and can't afford one, hit up Bree's replies. There are people in there volunteering to cover someone else's shot in the name of Fuck Measles.

I got my titers checked in May, and I'm good. If you're not sure, go get yer jabs!
If you are worried this is too big an executive function barrier you can go to a pharmacy and they will probably just jab you. That is what I did.

I'm not saying it's necessarily the right way to do this, that is just how much I am not fucking around with the measles
Go to your doctor and get your measles titers checked to make sure you are still immune and if not get re-vaccinated. It’s more and more likely all of us are going to eventually come in contact with it.

I only made like 10 so grab one if you want one.
