This line graph illustrates the percentage change in agency staff levels from the previous year for nine major U.S. federal scientific and health organizations between the fiscal years 2016 and 2025. The agencies tracked include the CDC, Department of Energy, EPA, FDA, NASA, NIH, NIST, NOAA, and NSF. For the majority of the timeline between 2016 and 2023, the agencies show relatively stable fluctuations, generally staying within a range of +5% to -5% change per year. However, there is a dramatic and uniform plummet starting in the 2024–25 period. Every agency depicted shows a sharp downward trajectory, with staffing losses ranging from approximately -15% to over -25%. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) shows the most significant decline, dropping to roughly -26%, while the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) shows the least severe but still substantial drop at approximately -15%.

Reckless Impulse Or what The Red Deck taught me about being trans When’s the last time you were all in? Not correct, committed, or certain; I mean all in. There’s a distinction between confidence and being all in. Confidence is informed, it’s practiced; it’s almost artificial. I think the ability to manufacture confidence is why it’s a high value commodity in our modern industrial capitalistic society. I’ve never been one for confidence though. A lot of people build Mono Blue Terror when they start playing Pauper. It’s a sound choice to make! It’s safe, it’s reliable. It’s not just a Control deck, it’s a deck that makes you feel in control. When a player passes with 2 untapped Islands and a Counterspell in hand, they’re confident. They can see the road ahead, they have control, they know they can make the tempo play. But I’m on the other side of the table. I started questioning my gender some time in early 2024. It didn’t feel like finding a missing puzzle piece, it felt more like finding the source of a gas leak. Sure I uncovered some critical information, but I also uncovered what at the time felt like an insurmountable amount of obligation. I started slow, seeing a therapist “just to make sure”, asking my friends to throw me cheeky “they/them” every once in a while, small stuff. Eventually I stopped bullshitting myself and made the appointment to start hormones. In the face of souring public opinion, increased violence, and an abundance of venomous rhetoric against trans people, I took my first dose of estrogen a week after the 2024 election. I was all in. I’m still sitting at the table, and my eyes are darting around analyzing the boardstate. In this moment I am not confident. I’m bluffing a card, I need to topdeck 1 more burn spell, my leg is bouncing around, my palms are damp, and all my calculations are hinging off of you not having 1 of 12 different cards that I’ve only seen 1 of so far. I start tapping my lands anyway. I’m not confident. I’m all in. I’ve never played a single game with Mono Blue. I’ve never cared about being in control; I care about being all in. I want to be one of “those who play with fire, who burn out in a vibrant and explosive finale as sulfur hangs in the warm summer air” as Sam from Rhystic Studies says. In the same video, he showcases Patrick Sullivan’s SCGLA Quarterfinals match against Ross Merriam. Chain Lighting on Ethersworn Canonist. Fetch. Flame Rift. Price of Progress. Fireblast. Handshake. I have this play stored in the same area of my brain that my estrogen dosage and blood test results are in. People hate certain decks, but I’ve never met an apologetic red deck pilot. I’ve never met an apologetic trans person. Red players just want to win, they don’t think about losing. I just want to live, I don’t think about dying. I’m all in.
