The term "heritage American" being bandied about is irritating b/c of its imprecision. Is it based on length of time in the US of your ancestors, being from England, whiteness, legal citizenship, or some other unspoken category? I don't think it's fully appreciated, just how much the sudden end of ~two centuries of extensive and reasonably straightforward daily reporting on every neighborhood/town/city in the US, in a standardized and searchable format, is going to screw up future historical research.
Furthermore, it's important for journalists to spend the first 10 years of their career in the type of city that people turn their noses up at. Not only does it give you a better appreciation for what journalism is for, it forces you to understand that "real Americans" aren't just Ohio Cletuses.
