My hot take on the SFWA decision is that it isn't stupid.

1. Bans work written by generative AI = good
2. If LLM is used for research, translation, etc the writer has to disclose it.

I don't like LLMs but the way AI is being crammed down our throats in every piece of software ... (cont)

Co-signed. AI is the worst thing to ever happen to HistoryTube; even as much as an AI-generated thumbnail or narrator and I'm muting your channel. You have a fucking duty to relate the truth of history as best as you're able, and if you're using ehn-good-enough AI to do it, I don't want hear it.
One of the WORST things you could get AI to do for you would be anything historical. Even just with google, never mind AI, a lot of what the internet has on offer is inaccurate, incomplete, or nonexistent. You need a human who knows where to look to get and synthesize the good stuff.
"concept artists can experiment with AI to make their lives easi-"

wrong

I smack you with Claire Hummel's immaculate and detailed understanding of costume design, which she got by studying historical references, which made her strong, which you will not become by relying on AI

If you’re a manager or AD and you can’t get people to make what you need without an ai example that’s a failure of your communication not theirs. Napkin art it if you can’t use your words, but you can since you’re using prompts so no excuse!
Every artist you know has a fucking reference both in their head and saved in books, objects, photo folders, etc. The sausage isn’t made like that and the experience of being able to take those references and make them into something that makes sense is kind of the whole thing, that’s communication
The act of gathering reference is such a deeper thing than just a fucking collage.

It's research, learning, assessing and building on your knowledge base.
Even google image search is dog shit for this, crack a fucking book.

Learning names, history, influences.

Or they point out that there are applications for LLMs - crunching data, for example - that are genuinely useful and were being implemented successfully and ethically before this whole thing started and stole all the funding away.

Also, as a kind of extension of this sentiment: people sometimes get a bit shirty when you slag off "AI" and say there is no ethical use case for the technology, because of course the term has been co-opted by the marketers of genAI and other LLM-related products.
Even if they do find a way to use it that isn't ethically repellent, or produces results that aren't transparently fake, it's always going to stink of these first few years of pathetic desperation.

Ever since the "Southern Strategy" in the early 70s. The writer of this letter is an old guy so he saw it happen when he was a young man. He can't claim ignorance now.

It's that time of the year where the usual suspects talk about the scourge of shoplifting.

They're using the same data that was proven to be faulty in 2023. Theft by employees is about 4x retail theft, and both, combined, are 1/15th of wage theft by employers.
