In honor of DHS spokesliar Tricia McLaughlin's resignation, let's revisit how her husband's company won a $220 million no-bid contract to run a stupid propaganda campaign featuring her boss, Kristi Noem, bashing immigrants while sitting on a horse in front of Mt. Rushmore.
Firm Tied to Kristi Noem Secretly Got Money From $220 Million DHS Ad Contracts
The company is run by the husband of Noem’s chief DHS spokesperson and has personal and business ties to Noem and her aides. DHS invoked the “emergency” at the border to skirt competitive bidding rule...

closing the strait of hormuz is kinda a "welps that was a mess, we got it reopened (dragged out that wreckage...), stuff is moving again" problem.

abqaiq is a facility in saudi that ~85% of their oil has to pass through. it's a complex desulfurization plant. How long would it take to rebuild that.
people think iran closing the strait is their main threat but it's actually flattening the facilities at abqaiq

It took a hot minute, but I can finally share my new paper on evidentiary pragmatism in transgender health care!

In it, I propose a new principle for evaluating scientific evidence based on the best reasonably achievable evidence, avoiding the ‘catch-22’ where trans care can never be justified.

With NYU Langone desisting from offering trans care, I feel the need to re-up this recent paper about how ‘the evidence is low-quality’ arguments are bullshit and how we can do better when evaluating scientific evidence.

a fucking pedophile sexually abused nearly every prospective and actual Olympian gymnast for over two decades, and the political discourse is hyper-fixated on the hypothetical unfairness of trans girls competing with cis girls
1 reason why I get so angry at anti-trans "safety in women's sports" people is NONE of them do SHIT or say ANYTHING about actual safety in womens sport. There are ongoing histories and challenges and abuses in sport, and folks are more than welcome to pay attention, and give a damn. But they don't.

The official US policy over Taiwan is about as comprehensible as the Schleswig-Holstein Question was. To misquote Palmerston, only three people have ever understood it, Richard Nixon, who is dead, a Chinese professor, who has gone mad, and I, who have forgotten.
it's insane to me that the mainstream press is mad at AOC over Taiwan when like, Taiwan policy is basically something basically 5% of the US FP elite can genuinely say coherently
I stopped caring about island chains and sixth generation fighters and whatnot when I realized this was the most anyone on either side of the Pacific had considered such things.

One way in which elected democrats could respond to the public is to use their platforms to refer to the right as garbage people not aligned with American values. We would prefer this over the constant “colleague” and “friends across the aisle” shit.

it's stupid because it inherently means accepting the silicon valley line on AI.

"the left" is like ten people. AI skeptics are most of the country. because we're well aware there are certain specific things the tech can do but ZERO evidence it's a multi trillion dollar industry
The reason that “the left is losing on AI” discourse makes me so incredibly upset is that the right has no positive vision for the future in which the mass unemployment predicted by boosters occurs

The US position, the premise of the White House's statements, is that Ukraine doesn't have agency, Ukrainians are wrong to do a version of "give me liberty or give me death," Ukraine's president doesn't speak for them, and America's goal is make them surrender.

Which is basically Russia's position.
Q: Zelenskyy said he doesn't think it's fair Trump is saying Ukraine has to make concessions & not Russia. What's Trump's response?

LEAVITT: I think the president would respond by saying he doesn't think it's fair thousands of Ukrainians are losing their lives, and Russians too, in this deadly war

tbh i think a lot of this comes down to the hollowing out of state capacity in global nations

neoliberalism has basically driven so many states to P3s that people don't get "states doing things" is still possible, but not necessary radical
china is incredible in its own way but don't mistake that with it being a radical government
