This is what happened in our neighborhood yesterday. ICE snatched a human being off of our streets, roughed them up badly, and then pepper sprayed legal observers as they documented it all. This is a daily occurrence happening all throughout Minnesota right now.

As I understand it, the rationale of the cops and cop-defenders is that the rhetoric in the Facebook comment could have agitated someone else into doing something violent or illegal.

Here are some of the problems with that theory.

A woman left a comment on Facebook criticizing the Mayor of Miami Beach,.

The Mayor of Miami Beach then sent the cops to her home.

The U.S. Department of Justice under Donald Trump is preparing to eliminate the ability of U.S. Attorneys to recuse themselves from cases due to conflicts of interest. A new rule expected this week would shift that authority to Pam Bondi.

"Minnesota is under siege. It might not yet be a civil war, but what the White House has dubbed “Operation Metro Surge” is definitely not just — or even primarily — an immigration enforcement operation. It is an occupation designed to punish and terrorize anyone who dares defy this incursion..."
I went to Minneapolis last week. What I saw was horrifying and inspiring in equal measure. Gift link to my latest column: www.nytimes.com/2026/01/19/o...

“With a single letter to Norwegian PM Jonas Gahr Støre, though, Trump has thrown out all pretence of caring about anything other than himself – or that he understands the very basics of how the Nobel is awarded, what it’s awarded for, or even how international relations are supposed to work.”
Trump's letter to Norway proves it: he's lost his mind over the Nobel Peace Prize
The US President is governing America like a mad king. The question is what the world is going to do about that

Not the sort of letter committed to paper by a well man. "Considering your Country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 Wars PLUS, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace"

This is probably the most accurate description.

Someone in their mid-50s today told me that this is the first time he had thought about or been affected by politics. And that guy is actively guarding buildings and his coworkers from ICE.
Minneapolis and Saint Paul have basically mobilized into a war economy of mutual aid and non-violent defense. I’ve never seen anything like it, even during Covid. People who barely vote are guarding their schools from ICE and doing the shopping for neighbors in hiding.
This is so smart. I’m so impressed with all the different ways you’re helping your neighbors.

Wanna know something? Right before migrants get loaded onto an ICE removal flight, they return their gray jumpsuit and get deported in whatever they were wearing when captured. Have heard from many migrants that the planes are freezing and some shackled people are in summer tank tops and flip flops.

It's not just the St. Paul Doubletree.
The Intercontinental in downtown St Paul is also shutting for now.
According to the Pioneer Press, they're both operated by an indigenous tribe, the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe.

FYI, ICE has been arresting Native Americans.
