I have a blog now. It's still a little rough around the edges with few posts, but I blog about #photography, the books I read and the movies I watch, #translation (particularly poetry), and stuff that interests me in the news, especially anything related to #japan.

The Year of the Fire Horse: Why Did Births Plummet in Japan in 1966?
The number of newborns in Japan showed a severe dip in 1966, which has been attributed to a superstition based on the 60-year zodiac cycle that suggested women born in that year would be hot-tempered ...

With two sons who are conscription age, I have deep misgivings. The CF is coming off of a decade or more of deeply broken leadership, where essentially the entire CF leadership has been forced to resign or even prosecuted for conspiring to enable sexual assault. Does the CF have the capacity here?
As the international security environment continues to deteriorate, including ongoing threats from 🇷🇺 and the spectre of US annexation, comes news that 🇨🇦 is seriously looking at how to hugely expand our military reserves. Finland‘s deep experience (see above🧵) seems a key point of reference. 30/x

This is my primary complaint.

I do study this stuff, at the graduate level at a fancy CS program.

Sam Altman and Elon Musk and their ilk have poisoned the well for one of the most important advances in maths and computer science in many years.

Like Monsanto took DNA modification & exploited it.

Mong Tong's Taiwan Mystery II features a montage of unusual architecture and occult phenomena from around the country. It was released along with an art book featuring photos and imagery from many of these sites. The music is also really great; dreamy instrumental psychrock. youtu.be/kwHcZaPLl58?...

Learned that my son’s gr 10 careers class has been showing O’Leary and Shark Tank videos to “learn how to pitch a startup.” I quite like the teacher and don’t want to cause a fuss, but I just can’t get over willingly introducing students to this utter and total moronic jerk.
one of the reasons Kevin O'Leary has mostly abandoned Canada for the USA is that he's an idiot and politicians of all stripes in Canada know he's an idiot so they stopped talking to him decades ago
Canadian multimillionaire and Shark Tank guy Kevin O'Leary went on TV to say he's upset Zohran won't talk to him: "I and others who invest in real estate have tried to get a meeting to figure out what's rhetoric and what's policy. So far for me it's been crickets."
