I have a blog now. It's still a little rough around the edges with few posts, but I blog about #photography, the books I read and the movies I watch, #translation (particularly poetry), and stuff that interests me in the news, especially anything related to #japan.

The number-one lesson I learned about photography in 2024.

The aircraft I’m on seems to be missing part of a jack flap fairing. Here’s my jet, versus one with the fairings intact.

Larry David has a spite shop, but I’ve never seen such a good spite email.

Now this is how you title a fundraising email, @movementyvr.bsky.social

Go donate to Movement to spite Bob Mackin’s insufferable claims that young caring people who can barely afford to live in this region are really just developer shills rolling in pools of gold coins.

This half-size (JUST HALF-SIZE) model of the Martian Moons eXploration (#MMX) spacecraft is currently in the ISAS lobby. The model was designed by “GigaStar”, an NPO led by Mase Yasufumi, who has now built… two… despite the crazy complexity! The twin is currently at Miraikan (biiiiig museum).
A large model of the MMX spacecraft. The half-sized model spacecraft is taller than a person, covered in gold for thermal protection, and flanked by large solar panels. It has four landing legs for landing on Phobos.

I like the Hobbit especially as it is fundamentally a ripping yarn.

That is a very good point and I wish you had been the subeditor, lol

I don’t follow? I was referencing Wet’suwet’en, which doesn’t have a treaty. My observation was that there is no apparent consensus within that FN about Coastal GasLink. Pacheedaht FN is similar. Willing to work on my blind spots, though!

“Ubik” but instead of asking for a tip every time you open it, the door asks you to rate on a scale of 1-10 whether you would recommend it to a friend

"A forty-year-old Spider-Man grapples with housing costs, childcare, and declining webbing potency."

I have no dislike for Tom Holland, but I do not think the MCU version of Spider-Man is all that good. Too much focus on tech gadgets, too much obsequiousness rather than teen angst, and teen swagger.

Andrew Garfield doesn’t think ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 3’ will ever happen

“It’s not happening and I don’t believe it ever will, but sweet of you to want it to happen"

It's complicated of course because Indigenous, Inuit and FN are not monumental polities. Some FN pursue resource extraction in spite of opposition by some members. Coastal Gaslink, Fairy Creek, etc.
nevint.bsky.social
In a just world. From what I understand, UNDRIP sidesteps true sovereignty by instead focusing on integrating FN into resource extraction.

Far-right X users who like saying "Orwelian" and "kafkaesque" should be forced to read ALL the books by the two authors and pass an exam on them.

You're living through one of the biggest technological transformations in world history and it has nothing to do with AI

Grid scale batteries are changing our electricity system. Excellent new visual story on batteries in FT today shows just how far this technology has evolved.

Fasten your seatbelts, this is just the beginning.

...People who have been used to getting their own way ("No new housing! Free on-street parking! Cyclists should stay on the sidewalk!) are feeling threatened. Even though they are rich, privileged, and have *nothing* to complain about. And then there is Facebook, which is beyond shitty now. Toxic.

Things are getting weird, even in Canada. I called in to the OCP community consultation, but friends of mine who went said there were Boomers there physically intimidating people. This is normal now. Never used to be here in Victoria. My sense is that it's because real change is happening, so...

Was (no longer, obvs) friends with someone who turned out to be a grassroots MAGA organizer in 2015-16. The approach, at scale, was to convert individuals on Reddit into not only voters but grassroots online campaigners. Individual engagement + network effect.

During the recent community consultation about whether to update the official community plan (OCP) to remove parking minimums and make it easier to build housing, there was all sorts of conspiracy talk about 15-minute cities and secret cabals. Particularly among 55+ cohort. Really disconcerting.

While I really enjoyed Woody Allen when I was young -- I stopped watching his stuff after Crimes and Misdemeanors, and I truly believe he identifies with the Martin Landau character -- I've tried some of them out recently, and it's all meh. Except for Manhattan, because of Gordon Willis.
