London is the safest city I’ve ever lived in. Every other American I know that lives here feels the same way simply by virtue of the lack of gun violence.

Any pundit or public figure (often taking gulf $) trying to paint this city as crime-ridden is plainly wrong and probably lying to you.

There should be a name for the fallow period after you've posted/got delivered the necessary parcels and cards but when there still MIGHT be time to order a couple of last-minute presents for people you'll be seeing before Christmas.

We have written, addressed and stamped most of Christmas cards. I've got a huge family plus there are the usual former colleagues/flatmates etc, so it's a major task. Now relaxing with a mulled wine.

America after every single shooting "now is not the time..." or as Trump put it after the most recent University shooting "things can happen"

We should think of political structures as more like gardens than mountains. If they are not properly maintained they disappear. I think we forgot that about liberal democracy.

As a purely intellectual exercise, if it’s not a race thing, how does King Charles land on this ‘who’s British enough’ index?

Mother’s family only changed name from Saxe-Coburg to Windsor in 1917, father Greek.

I think it's actually down to the way in the 1960s Britain caught on to American culture at a bit of a time-lag, plus the breakup of the Beatles. I shall explain in a thread.
I wonder how much of this difference comes from American Christmas being rooted in German culture?
