I saw The Sad Bastard Cookbook here so I mentioned it on Masto (in a "in case you need this" sense). It kinda went viral (1K shares). It jumped to a high ranking on Amazon and then they got media attention.

I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

One time my D&D sesh got held up for nearly an hour because while waiting for one of the guys to show up, someone brought up the local grocery store that 2/3rds of them have gone to, and it's some of the most passionate discussion these 30-to-50 year old men have had in easily a decade.

Most publishers (there are always exceptions) decide whether or not to buy a second book (or a third etc) based on how the previous book did. So when you pirate a book in most cases it’s less about the money you just stole from both author and publisher it’s about the future book you just killed.

This is 100% the conversation authors are having. Writing serialized comics is such a gamble because we never know how long we'll have funding. Even those authors who aren't struggling financially have meetings where they get read their own sales data by their publishers to guide what they do next.
Related: I feel like a lot of the piracy vs buying discourse (🤢 that this is even a thing) gets framed as stealing money from individual authors vs. stealing from faceless corporate publishers when for most authors it’s about whether or not they’ll get to publish another book.

Okay, if I have finished the part in Absolution where Lowery finds the "Don't eat" note, does it get worse than that or can I finish the book? Very fortunate to have been listening to the audiobook over the sink/ very unfortunate to have picked days before Thanksgiving to have this mental image.

Unsolicited artist advice of the day: if you're a freelancer with no back up devices or storage, remember to pick a few things up in the black Friday sales. Even a pen drive to back up your projects so if you have a catastrophic hard drive failure you wont lose everything..learn from my mistakes. 😅
