This doesn't matter as much if you're picking up a copy of something like Twilight that's been out for 20 years, but something that came out this year/last year/ relatively recently would benefit from a new copy if you really like the author & can afford it. Library sales definitely count here too.

They don't count, because publishers have no way to monitor them, versus new is purchased orders coming in through a warehouse & that's what gets counted towards royalties/ sales data.

Most publishers (there are always exceptions) decide whether or not to buy a second book (or a third etc) based on how the previous book did. So when you pirate a book in most cases it’s less about the money you just stole from both author and publisher it’s about the future book you just killed.

It gets so much weirder than Hollywood is prepared to adapt anything for, and flattening it to the first book/movie- which admittedly is all most people know- is like if you only made a LOTR movie about the Shire. Loved those books as a kid.
