If we're starting "what is a Christmas movie" discourse early this year, I will tap the sign
*It’s cold outside
*Friends gather for a meal together
*Everyone is thinking about a very special little baby
*An important visitor comes in through the ventilation system

Dismal framing. Every aspect of most asylum seekers’ lives is controlled & paid for by the Home Office. They can’t work, are told where to live & have no autonomy or dignity. So they aren’t *choosing* to use taxis & don’t need to be “banned” from doing so. The HO just needs to get its act in order.
Government to ban asylum seekers from using taxis
The ban is set to come in February and any exemptions will have to be signed off by the Home Office.

The NHS has ALWAYS relied on migrant staff since inception don’t let them pretend otherwise. I am here alive posting for this reason
Every single doctor in my grandad's GP practice founded just after the NHS was either a first or second generation immigrant from the Caribbean, South Asia, or Eastern Europe.

my british grandparents (born 1903) welcomed a Black caribbean migrant as their daughter in law
In 1971, 1 in 3 NHS doctors were overseas born

Given the avg patient age, those born in the 1890s were quite likely to meet a migrant doctor

Whatever some commentators born in the 60s/70s/80s say, most ppl (incl their grandparents) regularly & positively interacted w/migrants their entire lives

1/5 It was entirely predictable that The Telegraph would jump on @DavidOlusoga’s Empire series to fight its right wing culture war for control of our public history. Let’s see what they’ve done:

And the folks who are actually writing full-time generally only got there after years of day jobs, family support, or both.

The point of sharing this is not to demoralize anyone, but to let emerging writers know they're not failing if they can't make a living off writing alone. Almost no one can.
almost every novelist you read who's not from the airport fiction or bestseller sections is working a full on day job, including multi-award winners and absolute legends, or they have a spouse or trust that supports them. virtually across the board. just normalize in your mind that's how it works.
I know we know this, but authors need to get better at talking about how they actually make their money. Stop pretending it's from the books.

Trial by jury is our final protection against vexatious and politically-motivated prosecutions. It has never been more important than it is now and needs to be protected.

Not a lot of pretty football (in any Spurs games today) but Spurs Women gave us that rarest of rare treats - a Martha Thomas goal - we got peeks at Molly and Kit, and most importantly we top the group and are through to the Subway Cup QFs. 🥪🏆#COYS

More enjoyable pod this week.

Erroneously said Beth Mead's 'injury' and Rene Sleger's reorganisation was the 11th minute. Actually it took until the 19th for them to call on Mead's laughable acting skills!
🟰NEW POD🟰

It was honors even in the latest NLD, featuring a record attendance for a #THWFC game at Brisbane Road.

We chat:
• Unchanged lineup, different approach
• Ever-steady Drew & other PotM nominees
• Checking in on Tinka

Plus, a Bristol City preview.

The misconceived notion that the way to deal with the backlog of asylum claims is to duplicate the system so as to have exit assessments too.

In essence: addressing the problem of a queue by forming another queue, just as long.

Daft, as well as cruelly unsettling.
