The federal government is dismantling pretty much every vehicle for immigration relief and the ‘opposition’ party is negotiating for agents to wear name tags.
🚨HOLY CRAP. The Trump admin just took a SLEDGEHAMMER to due process, largely eliminating the Board of Immigration Appeals process and MANDATING DISMISSAL of ALL appeals (which cost $1,000 thanks to OBBBA) filed after tomorrow unless a majority of the BIA votes to hear the case.

The admin is turning the BIA into just a place to hand down rights stripping precedents (actually can just have the AG do that) and not hear any actual appeals from immigrants

Um, how am I supposed to cite which state is comparable in geographic size to a given small country now??

(For real this sucks though.)
It'd be ironic if it was because of this (which is actually really bad!)

I don't have much to say on the subject of Scott Adams except that I remember being on a Metafilter thread in 2011 when a rando said, "he has a certified genius I.Q., and that's hard to hide."

Somebody then said, "Hi Scott," and it was, in fact, him.

A few months ago, ICE hired me

I didn't sign and submit any paperwork. I almost certainly failed the drug test. I'm real outspoken about my opposition to the Trump administration, and I am extremely googlable

And yet, there it was, in plain English. "Welcome to ICE!"

What happens when you do minimal screening before hiring agents, arming them, and sending them into the streets? We're all finding out.

We deserve political leaders who fight as hard for democracy as the average canvasser and ICE observer.
I have been as impressed by the normal people of this country as I have been disgusted by elite institutions and every bit of optimism I have that we are going to make it comes from that
It's incredibly demoralizing to constantly see the highest institutions of government and academia and the most important and widely seen news outlets knuckle under one after another, but then to see the gulf between that and the bravery of communities and neighbors and teachers - that's something

Just a reminder that George Conway is not fundraising right now to run against a MAGA republican.

He is fundraising to run against progressive Democrats.

This is happening around the country and it's the new normal in immigration court — the creation of a "heads I win, tails you lose" system where the government is seeking to dismiss virtually EVERY SINGLE asylum claim through so-called "safe third country" agreements.
NEW: The Trump administration is stepping up its battle against NYC's immigrants—stopping their asylum cases and instead filing motions to send them to other countries across the world.

One Latin American woman was told this week she'd be sent to Uganda.

Hadn’t thought about this in a while.
I don't know, Aaron. I think we need to take this seriously. In fact, after surveying hundreds of years of history in the past few days, I've written an article assessing the originalist case here:

This is what asylum practice is increasingly looking like; the Trump admin is moving to "pretermit" every single claim (or nearly every single claim) as a move to avoid having to grant anyone asylum.
I was in a tribunal a week ago where DHS moved to pretermit every single asylum case on "safe third country grounds." Every. single. one.

At one point, a judge scheduled a second master for a man to prove he would be in danger in Honduras. Confused, he said "No, Peru. I'm from Peru."
Immigration judges are "pretermitting" huge swathes of asylum claims on the grounds that the person can be deported to a third country instead — one of the explicit statutory grounds for denying the right to apply for asylum.

This is now happening at large scale nationwide.

An all-time fav that for some reason is streaming nowhere. I own an external disc drive literally just so I can continue to rewatch this one perfect movie.
I can’t gather all my Rob Reiner thoughts at this point in the evening, but my very first favorite grown-up movie that was My Favorite Movie, like I went around telling people for years that it was, was THE SURE THING in 1985. A very big part of the romcom switch being flipped for me.

This is incredibly good news. Tom Perriello is leader as well as a genuinely principled guy. (Think Paul Wellstone.) You'll find Tom's fingerprints are all over the @indivisible.org origin story. Congratulations, Virginia. Now make this happen!

WHOA. Trump says he will pardon Juan Orlando Hernandez, who once said that he wanted to “shove the drugs right up the noses of the gringos.” He had people killed as part of his narco-trafficking ring, which he at times operated directly out of his presidential office.
