Hi, shipwreck autist here! It was in fact true at the time. The Edmund Fitzgerald also had a sister ship, the Arthur B. Homer, which had the same structural defect the Edmund Fitzgerald did and was quietly retired shortly after Fitz sank. She remains the largest ship ever scrapped on the Great Lakes

poor children literally went without food. people lost jobs and went into debt and got evicted and sold their cars they need to get to work. people who otherwise would have lived longer will die younger because of the stress of this. people did things for money they can't undo

I got a mimosa in first class. I don’t drink and weigh 95 soaking wet. I had like three sips and now I’m kind of tipsy. AMA
Got upgraded to first, so there is that. Genuinely not sure how that happened. I was nowhere near the top of the upgrade list and the Delta app still thinks I’m in C+

So it turns out... the US air travel system was incredibly, deeply dependent on federal funding to just run day-to-day all this time, to the benefit of private airline shareholders, when everyone thinks that state-run trains are leeching off the government. Weird!
