Waterloo Region’s finest citizen journalist has all the details from the very very sketchy vote at council that resulted in $173 million being earmarked for a new police comms centre. Read down this thread for the shenanigans.
Staff leads role call and it seems everyone is present except for Cllr Shantz, which should mean we can't have any tie votes like at the earlier meeting...right?! Well, stay tuned.

New from me at @inthesetimes.com: I talked with new Jewish anti-Zionist projects, from a radical Hebrew school in NYC to a chavurah in Sacramento to a new siddur in DC. What binds them together is a commitment to diaspora Judaism:

Gross but not surprising! It's disappointing to see organizations partnering with the SA in Waterloo Region. :/
There's a couple reasons so many IWW songs are set to the tunes of hymns and one is that the Salvation Army Band would show up and try to stop workers organizing by playing hymns to drown out speeches, so the Wobblies came up with words so they could sing along. SA has been trash all along.
It's that giving time of year again, so this is a reminder that no matter how they try to dress it up, the Salvation Army is not a charity.

It is incredibly dangerous that universities are signing agreements that tie purported measures against antisemitism to rolling back diversity in admissions and excluding trans people from basic facilities.

This ends terribly for everyone.
BREAKING: Northwestern University has agreed to pay the U.S. Treasury $75 million, over the course of three years as part of an agreement with the federal government to restore funding and end investigations into the university

Ugh.
Two men who occupy prominent positions in Canada’s media landscape just travelled to Israel, where they received a briefing from the Israeli government.

Yeah. What are journalism ethics anyway?

Those men were TVO’s Steve Paikin and Global News’ Ben Mulroney:

Makes my stomach hurt every time I see it, knowing not one cowardly, feckless piece of garbage journalist colleague spoke up for her. Not one.

Why should I pay attention to any of these desperate social climbing gizzards when they allow that, and so much else?

Antisemitism is a lot like Qanon child abuse conspiracies in that there’s this real and bad phenomenon and, parallel to that, what can only be described as a large scale mass psychosis about a mostly fictional version of the same phenomenon

no I’m not surprised, just imagining (among other things) an opposition party that took this population seriously and devoted itself over the many years it would take to make this country actually livable for them
"In 2025, 40% of women aged 15 to 44 say they would move abroad permanently if they had the opportunity. The current figure is four times higher than the 10% who shared this desire in 2014, when it was generally in line with other age and gender groups."

NEW — I dug into the story of ICE abducting a 13-year-old boy in Massachusetts and moving him 500 miles across state lines without notifying his mother, local cop's complicity, and how the federal government's justification for such cruelty is already falling apart:
ICE took a 13-year-old they said had a gun. Local cops say he didn’t.
Now he's detained 500 miles away from his Massachusetts home.

“Officers beat at least one other man; pushed over a woman w/a prosthetic leg; kept a woman’s hands tied until her skin swelled around the plastic; and took the ailing 82yo to the hospital, where, she later told me, an officer hit her in her side, took her pain meds, and told her, “Welcome to hell.”
"In Hebrew they commented on our appearances, called us Hamas, gestapo, and whores, and joked about our obvious discomfort as people shifted and vocalized in pain. A speaker blasted Israeli pop music."
