I was going to try to read all the Booker Prize shortlisted titles before Monday’s announcement but I DNF’d one and have taken a month to read another.

I hate a withheld backstory–when the characters all know about/are motivated by a past event but it’s slowly revealed to the reader. It feels false and exasperating to me.

I worked at four papers. Three of them are shut down and the fourth is greatly reduced - about 20% of the journalists remain and they all work from home, newsroom is closed.
A stat we don't talk about enough: Newspapers have lost 77% of their jobs over the last 20 year, more than any of the 532 other industries tracked by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
