Still extremely funny that the University of Minnesota has buildings called both Anderson and Andersen and they were nordicpilled enough to think that people should intuitively understand the difference.

I lived thru the end of public smoking. Early in my career I presented to city councils who were smoking, in front of audiences who were smoking.

Smoking in restaurants, airplanes, hospitals…

All of that seems insane now, but it was very controversial when we DID change it.

We CAN change things.
It’s crazy that people used to be able to just smoke cigarettes wherever they wanted

It /is/ a problem that the right has articulated a reactionary vision for the humanities and the left has pushed ROI analysis to boost tech and marketing degrees.

As former humanities dean, I learned "ROI"/"data" matter if they serve the larger narrative, which is set by not just admin and trustees, but by the public. The narrative is that (a) humanities is irrelevant and (b) costs are too high. So, sacrifice hum to serve costs, even if data show otherwise.

And the actor who played him, Carol O’Connor, summed up Archie Bunker so damn well, so long ago. Incredible foresight by Rob Reiner 💔…the Archies have nearly destroyed America 50 years later

The mayor-elect's decision not to point out the identity of the hero who saved Jewish lives in Sydney today was a leap of faith that we Jews would do so, and we will:

Ahmed al Ahmed shone his light in the darkness. May he be quickly and fully healed.

To save one life is to save the world.

Don't mistake incompetence for accident. The degradation of your social media feed, the collapse of your news, the defunding of your school—it is all functional.

For me it was an art appreciation class. I have no talent in making art, but it taught me a new way of looking at aesthetic and also made reading that referenced art much more rich. Pound-for-pound, I probably learned more in that class than a lot of my journalism classes.

Questions of this ilk are not complex. They should be answerable by a graduate-level researcher. (How do you see the world? What methods do you use? Who do you read?)

And yet, they are often stumped.
