Very concerning glowing reference to Vancouver’s failed empty homes tax in the latest Seattle Downtown Comprehensive plan update. The EHT found a piddling 1,400 homes vacant and only 400 went back on the market. Planners expected to find 20-30,000. It stifled construction too. Don’t do it.

Hot take: don’t play a movie for students before break. It’s boring to watch a movie in every class and you will just be annoyed that kids don’t seem interested/excited to watch it!

Do something fun but structured instead. I promise, it will be easier to manage before break behavior!
I made it to Winter Break! Whew!

Ultimate Tic Tac Toe was a hit in all of my classes today. Loved having something mathy and fun to send us off to break. Plus, a few kids said they wanted to play with their family over break! 🥰

100%. For example, what if voters aren’t asking for a line graph showing retail theft going down, but to not see any context-free, undated mass shoplifting videos in their feeds? Good luck with that if our palantíri algo overlords don’t wish it.

Everyone thinks GHOSTBUSTERS is a libertarian fantasy about the triumph of business but it's actually a cautionary tale about how the 80s antipathy towards government & push for privatization results in dangerously incompetent bureaucrats & a private sector exploiting natural disasters for profit.

When mad drivers tell you that you, a cyclist, don't belong on roads because you don't pay registration and the gas tax, show them the Road Damage Calculator. Compare, for example, the damage made by a small SUV and a longtail cargo e-bike. Very different orders of magnitude roaddamagecalculator.com

One of the biggest moments of my career:
USCIS canceled my client’s naturalization oath ceremony. We filed a lawsuit, went to trial, and the judge swore him in right there in the courtroom!

Sam Alt-man is most likely the name of a android sent from the future to trick humans into becoming slaves to machines before some kind of future war.

Indeed. Unlike Charlie Kirk, you can describe and quote the Reiners' work in a glowing memorial piece.

You can't do that with Kirk—his life's work was advocating for hatred and bigotry—and the NYTimes didn't.

Honestly portraying him would have been, as they say, inconceivable.
I'm having trouble finding the "America Mourns Rob and Michelle Reiner" piece from the NY Times Editorial Board.

I'm pretty excited for Cats 2.0.
Now with thumbs!
Raccoons have learned to adapt for life alongside humans, and our piles of discarded food, for many thousands of years. For the raccoons that live in Forest Park, that adaptability includes the careful avoidance of crossing the road. (@stlpublicradio.bsky.social)
Why didn't the raccoon cross the road? Missouri researchers use GPS to find out
A new study from the St. Louis Zoo Institute for Conservation Medicine sheds light on the lives of 10 racoons in Forest Park, including a particularly adventurous forager named “Frankie.”

MAGA is a far greater threat to "social cohesion" and "social trust" than immigrants are, as I try to argue in this piece
This is a point I keep coming back to. You cannot defend a high trust society by orchestrating hate campaigns and moral panics against disfavored groups and harassing the populace with masked paramilitary thugs.
Miller's arguments are that "Third World" can't assimilate and that 1965 immigration act unraveled social cohesion.

But these are absurd claims. I took them on here. If you want to talk "social cohesion," Trump/Miller are doing more to erode it than immigrants are.

Since Millennials and young Xers were the first social media and Internet personalities they're now Legacy. For the new thirty, fourty years there'll be the gatekeepers and they're not going to let newcomers take their spots willingly. Just like how boomers dominate pol and fin.
I love that for us.

I've been watching a lot of British panel shows recently and watching them switch between SI, freedom units, and Imperial is wild. It seems SI is for cm, grams, and kg for small amounts, meters and pounds for middle amounts, and stones, miles, and ton for large amounts.
HOW DARE YOU QUESTION OUR VICTORY UNITS

(Also I don't know how to break it to you but most actual scientists here in the US *also* use Victory Units in their daily lives and use the Socialist Units for professional work)

ALL HAIL THE VICTORY UNITS
As a *science* fiction writer (amonst many talents 😀) why, oh why, do you present the weather forecast in Fahrenheit?!? Let's get real and stick to SI units .... Centigrade rules! (everywhere but USA)

Early this year I kept seeing people on this site crying that they didn’t bother contacting their Republican congressional and state reps because “they didn’t listen anyway” and I cannot emphasize how wrong that thinking is
RIGHT NOW: Republican Senator Greg Goode, one of the key undecided senators (who actually voted to advance the gerrymander past committee on Tuesday) is giving a speech that makes it pretty clear he's going to vote no.

Says his constituents kept telling him to oppose it.
Happening this afternoon: the Indiana Senate votes on redistricting.

Since mid-decade gerrymandering began over the summer, this is the only actual vote that feels genuinely undecided going into the roll call.
