Wow: Lemkin Institute for Genocide Prevention (named for Holocaust survivor Raphael Lemkin, who coined term "genocide") calls Clinton's remarks "genocide denial."

"Young people in the US are not stupid or gullible. They simply reject genocide – something the Secretary might consider doing as well."

As I know from having editing-proof and advance backer PDFs of my own work show up on pirate sites, your "honest book piracy platforms" take Advance Reader Copies, review PDFs, in-progress production files, and advance-draft files from crowdfunding projects.

Yes, it's stealing.

Unlike big music labels, book publishers operate on razor-thin margins. Many authors publish through small publishers, quite a few self-publish, and the technology for digital publication, sales and distribution has existed for a quarter-century.

There's nothing honest about book-pirate platforms.

PDFs and accessibility, from reports to game books: this example VoiceOver is being used to demonstrate how screen reader software interacts with PDFs. VoiceOver for MacOS is built into MacOS and is free. Surprise: PDFs are... not great for accessibility: www.youtube.com/watch?v=hKN3...

each of us contains the full genetic instructions for both testosterone & estrogen driven hormone loadouts (along with varying combos of both)

this can be changed at any time. our genes will even start expressing themselves differently within ~3-6 months.

this is an existential threat to fascists.

That legit makes me sound like a cyborg and I freaking dig it.

What a time to start reading Shameful Bodies again - but I do recommend reading it, especially if you're at all interested in certain rhetoric about (American) norms of beauty, of efficiency, of where we get this messed-up relationship with our bodies. ESPECIALLY now.

Used to be you could bankrupt student loans the same as any other loan- they changed that rule at the exact same time they started encouraging students to take our larger and larger loans
This is debt indenture and it should be illegal.
Law school cost me $190,000.

I have paid $206,000 since graduation.

I now owe $223,000.

I pay $830 per month, and next year it will be more.

I genuinely believe law school student loans are designed to make pro bono representation impossible.

Not only can the country absolutely afford to do a lot more good things that help people– in housing, healthcare, infrastructure, and environment– there is no reason not to do it. Pretty simple: We should do big things that help people and not do things that hurt people. bsky.app/profile/cost...
How many times in your life have you heard a member of Congress or someone on TV say “we can’t afford it” when talking about something small but very important? It’s been happening my entire life. We can’t afford it? They’re putting seven times the annual budget of the EPA into immigrant detention.

To everyone who feels they must take action to protect the vulnerable, but has no idea what they can actually do:

Find someone who is overwhelmed and carry some of that weight for them.

Cook them a nice meal. Help them with their taxes. Make life less tedious and exhausting.

Love is resistance.

Reupping this because it came up in the discourse again. The gospel story about Jesus healing on the Sabbath isn’t what you think it is:

The Pharisees thought that healthcare workers deserved weekends.

Jesus didn’t.
(1/19/22) #Delafina777-Judaism #Delafina777-Christianity

So, the man with the withered hand story is actually a prime example of how the gospels demonize--or get used to demonize--completely normal behavior from Jews.

The fact that they can't distinguish between "wanted" and "needed" is pretty much the problem.

Being wanted just means someone values you for your presence and who you are, but it requires being someone whose presence can add value.

Being needed gives you power over the other person.
My essay does, however, dismiss this “message” because it’s hogwash. Nobody is telling men they are unwanted at home—quite the opposite—but reifying this “message” does make it easier to vilify single moms (and stereotypical nagging wives).

TIL about a memorial ceremony in Iceland in 2019 to mark the end of a glacier, changing the place name from Okjökull to Ok (jökull = glacier). Uncompromising wording on the bronze plaque:

1. Thread on the history of alt text and some tips for using alt text on social media specifically.
The history of alt text goes back to 1993. The alt attribute was introduced for HTML 1.2 to be used for text-based browsers, which load faster by not loading most of the graphic content.

This was a big deal when bandwidth connections were super limited.

Ran across this in Publishers Weekly, of all places, and - not sure if I've heard anything about it elsewhere? It looks like Japanese government is trying to establish a centralized platform for manga distribution outside of Japan:

This is so common though! So many people just believe that Someone Will Sort It All Out and that there's ultimately a Boss Of Everything who sort of keeps things in line. They genuinely don't know that politics is real and not just a game they play.

It’s a story about what happens when someone who has spent their entire life masking, surviving and running finally has to face the wreckage left behind by his own unprocessed trauma and violence.

What better dirt for disinformation to grow?
Preliminary results show that the current framework of "AI" makes ppl less likely to help or seek help from other humans, or to seek to soothe conflict, and that people actively prefer that framework to any others, literally serving to make them more dependent on it.
