If you're seeing encouragement/demands to do alt text and you're overwhelmed or confused about how to do it and you're worried you're going to do it wrong...

this thread is for you.

First: prompt questions to get you started.
ebthen.bsky.social
Alt text prompt Qs:

What would someone who can't see the image need to know about it in order to take part in the conversation? What is it about this image that made you choose it? What are the important details someone who could see the image would take away from it?

(Not for images of text.)

Yup, people will assume others are vaccinated, even though they've likely let their vaccines wane. Unfortunately the vaccines don't 100% stop transmission.
I keep masking because I know we didn't improve indoor air enough. We need better filtration and air replacement everywhere
ebthen.bsky.social
That's what "you can stop masking if you're vaccinated" was. It was permission for folks who think of themselves as "normal" to stop caring about not harming other people.

Watching the web world move on to AI when I can't even get teams to know when to use an aria-label or not or throw in a little more color contrast really just makes me want to melt into the earth. I know I complain about this stuff a lot, but it's pretty devastating to me.

Anyway. How we make values like "caring about how our actions affect other people and choosing to actively try not to harm other people" mainstream is by spreading them and making them seem obviously correct.

Regardless, caring about how your actions affect other people and making choices in line with that is about your values.

So, no, I don't think people developed "empathy burnout" as a result of 2020. I think people, especially in 2021 going forward, got permission to stop caring.

The entire concept of "empathy burnout" is why I think the way people talk about empathy is bullshit.

It's a model where people are allowed to opt out of doing the right thing because they don't feel the right things.

It's a model where everything is about vibes, not values.

Every Wednesday, publisher and MAHA activist Tony Lyons’ nonprofit MAHA Action gathers a roster of RFK Jr. allies for a “MAHA Action Media Hub” call.

The meeting offers a glimpse into Kennedy’s world, showcasing how a fringe movement now holds legitimate power.

Fun little reminder that before Bari Weiss was destroying a large media outlet, she was just a random blogger arguing for subminimum wage for disabled people. 😉
(This post is about listening to disabled people.)

Please help me get to the dentist today. They've estimated it'll be around $1200 (plus rideshare back.and forth).

I would really like to have a chance at making it, please? 💕💸

A graphic of a watercolor turquoise river, with splashing around rocks, and text in the center reading “Inclusive Portfolio Day Share: Alt text.” Four disability clip art graphics are around it, one of a deafblind cane, one poodle guide dog, one round pair of glasses, and a manual wheelchair.

Also for people who struggle with alt text, I’d encourage gently asking yourself: is it impossible, or is it difficult?

Part of being in the disability community is accommodating each other, and zero alt text means a ton of people are excluded (and your work isn’t as searchable either!).

This looks absolutely amazing. I cite @talilalewis.bsky.social’s work constantly (truly just cited them in a guest lecture on Friday).

This is pay what you want, October 23rd and October 30th 2025. Two consecutive Thursdays at 5p - 7p PT // 7p - 9p CT // 8p - 10p ET.

Because obviously what we think (or what I think, anyway) is that poop is organic and biodegradable and the decomposers will take care of it before too long.

But apparently not if there's a shit-ton of it all in the same place. It might get covered over but it will still be poop.
ebthen.bsky.social
I was thinking about what I've learned from Time Team and one surprising thing was that old poop still stinks.

Like hundreds of years old human poop still stinks.

And archaeologists dig in old latrines anyway.

yeah, at first I thought it was just one account but it turns out it's like whack-a-mole and it makes me really angry.

I'm not even entirely sure why it makes me so angry but it just. Does.

I don't care if it's for fundraising. As someone who has done a lot of it on social media, that's a trash way to go about it.

I'm going to block that account that keeps putting horrible images of cats and dogs on trending topics.

I block every single one of those I see. Every. Single. One.

It makes me really angry and also I'm pretty sure they're scams.

Holy. Shit.

I did not need that stress. But pleased for the Bears. Very pleased.
