I made a starter pack of people in British Columbia who post about generally urbanist topics and local issues.

Its mostly from my own following list, but comment here and I'll add you (or any suggestions) to it.

There's a whole cultural movement that insists men cannot possibly do anything that isn't completely testosterone-soaked unless they're either performing to attract women or are gay/"weak".

I’m honestly shocked that this story from @globalnews.ca has flown under the radar. Confirmation that Amit Shah, the second-most powerful man in the Indian government, was directly involved in the assassinations on Canadian soil. globalnews.ca/news/1151469...

The reason people do NOT opt out of online dating, despite its engineered horrors, is because increasingly it's the only dating. Period.

Unpopular opinion but:

YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR OWN ACTIONS.

Israel/Netanyahu/whoever didn't make you antisemitic the same way that Osama bin Laden didn't "make" people Islamophobic. You always have the choice to *not* meet hate with hate.

I know a lot of people won’t click through to read about “med beds” so here’s the crucial quote to explain how fucking crazy this is.

Trump just posted an AI video of himself promising every American access to this.

Personally I think that we should end the program that is creating a breeding ground for contemporary forms of slavery, and I find it very weird that some leftists have negatively polarized themselves into defending it.
Calls to end migrant worker program will only benefit bosses - who will further exploit this anti-migrant xenophobic discourse to intensify labour discipline, pay shitty wages, and exploit & indenture workers. UN has called Canada's TFW Program "a breeding ground for contemporary forms of slavery."

I actually do want more local food production but that’s because I’m a paranoid nationalist, not because I incorrectly think it’s better for carbon emissions.

Quebec’s state enforced “secularism” is bigotry and should be clearly condemned.
The photo chosen is a kick to the gut. Taken during the early days of the pandemic when my neighbours’ synagogues (and everything for that matter!) were closed. Their minyans and songful prayers brought us solace during difficult times.
The Quebec government is planning to pass a law to ban prayer in public, a move so blatantly unconstitutional I'm wondering if it's a joke. www.montrealgazette.com/news/provinc...

BC has very low taxes. We absolutely have room to raise them.
An individual earning $140,000 pays the following provincial income tax each year:

BC - $11,000
AB - $11,000

ON - $13,000

SK - $18,000
MB - $19,000

NS - $21,000
NL - $21,000
NB - $21,000
PE - $22,000

QC - $29,000

SD61, the Victoria BC school district, is considering using wards, and the way the trustees are to be divided up is super un-proportional.

The proposal is:

- View royal/ Highlands: ~15k ppl
- Oak Bay: 18k ppl
- Esquimalt: 19k ppl

- Saanich: ~125k ppl, 2 trustees
- Victoria: ~102k ppl, 2 trustees

The Libs don’t care about BC.

- There was no Canadian shipyard that bid this, because they’re all full with other contracts for years.

- the Feds fully paid for ships from THIS SAME YARD for the maritimes, while we get to pay ourselves and they’re mad about it.

Just wanted to say -- a tsunami wave crosses the Pacific kind of like the speed of a jetliner. Russian quake was big, but if there's a wave it'll take hours to reach NA. (Not like the Cascadia Subduction Zone.) Experts assessing whether there's anything. Keep checking this map.

This is the most recent Tsunami report for the US and Canada mainland.

Warnings and advisories for Alaska and Aleutians, Watch notices for the rest of the pacific coast. Watch notices mean they don't expect damage, but to stay alert and updated as reports come in.

I’ve been visiting Vancouver over the weekend, and this city’s government (really the park board) has a real problem with coming up with rules for things that are nonsense.

Like what do you mean the beach “closes at 10”? This is a statement dreamt up by the utterly deranged.

Winnipeg’s 2022 Mayoral election was so cursed

You’ve got:

Gillingham, conservative, 27%
Murray, Green/Liberal, 25%
Klein, also a conservative, 15%
Loney, Social enterprise guy, 15%
Ouellette, also a Liberal, 8%

Like 4/5 of you are ostensibly in the same parties! What are you doing?!

this is so evil lol
The NIMBYs are rallying against the elementary school in the Olympic Village, promised 20 years ago. The typical complaints. "Too big, too much, why here?".
