New billboard in town 👀
Billboard reads: "There will never be a bell loud enough, a helmet strong enough, or clothing bright enough to make up for poor infrastructure. Join us in fighting for safer streets. Vision Zero Vancouver and Rovelo Creative." Beside the text, a picture of a child riding a bike in a painted bike lane.

I feel particularly proud of this one. Please clap.

It's not "tyranny" unless it's from the Tyre region of ... uh, Lebanon? Instead, it's "sparking authoritarianism"

Oooh, this is a bad year for a New Westie to admit to lacrosse intolerance. Your mayor is going to be very, very disappointed in you.
anthonyfloyd.ca
I'd like to say it was out of spite, but more out of financial necessity I went to one of the local universities instead (Dalhousie)

That was pretty much my experience on the East Coast too. Fill in a form, submit your transcripts, wait. Due to the differences in curriculum, I was particularly irritated by the rejection letters from a few Ontario unis along side scholarship offers from other Ontario unis.

You only need to pull the video you specifically want off the camera, so there's not much juggling of video. It doesn't have GPS built-in but if you record your rides with Strava or something that gives you a gpx/tcx, you can merge the track in.
anthonyfloyd.ca
Nah, I'm still recording every ride. My threshold for posting to the internet has gone up, however.

I use a Cycliq Fly 12. It's a good camera with an integrated bike light. It works essentially like a dashcam in that it continuously overwrites older videos. Great battery life too. Highly recommend.

At some point, I expect them to get a lecture from the Leopards Eating Peoples Faces voters.
anthonyfloyd.ca
As far as I can tell, they're supporting their local tyrant.

Making being "anti-fascist" un-American was something else but now saying "having a King is what the Founders wanted" is right off the wall.
anthonyfloyd.ca
Seeing American politicians argue that tyranny is not only not so bad, but also *required* if you expect to draw a paycheck in the future is just wild.

And, honestly, it also echoes of "Live Free or Die".

What's wrong with "Wild Rose Country" anyway? Probably too environmental for her.
anthonyfloyd.ca
Putting "Strong and Free" on your provincial license plate is just so cringe.

1) Nationalistic slogan for a nation you're threatening to leave
2) There's nothing "True North" about Alberta but I guess that's why it was left out
3) It has echoes of "Alberta Proud" or "Alberta Strong" movements 🤮

We went through it 3 years ago with my eldest, and are on round 2 now. TBH the most challenging thing is to get the kid comfortable tooting his own horn and saying nice things about himself rather than the application processes.
anthonyfloyd.ca
But, again, it varies. Applying to, say, Langara is a very different experience than applying to UBC.
anthonyfloyd.ca
It varies. UBC in particular takes a much more holistic approach to admissions than, say, some high-profile Ontario schools.

It's a bit of a more involved process, but it tries to address a lot of the grade-inflation problems and it also makes admissions a bit more equitable. A bit.

So glad I took the time to write this explainer last year because Poilievre adores saying the Nazis = socialists #cdnpoli thetyee.ca/News/2024/11...

I mean, the kid submits the same reference letter for different applications. If you're applying for, say, a dozen different things, it's not realistic to expect your referees to write a dozen reference letters.
anthonyfloyd.ca
Some choose to, some don't. For both my kids, there have been a lot of applications, and it's not unusual to re-use (with permission) the same reference letter for different applications. Typically in those cases, the kids (and sometimes the parents) see them.
anthonyfloyd.ca
It's university and scholarship application season, and consequentially, reference letter season.

Reading the things that adults have to say about my kid (kids, really) makes me super proud and somehow makes any room I'm in super dusty.

Did that work? Doesn't seem to work for me.
