I wrote this three years ago and cringe a little at the quality of my prose, but also I do stick by this article and everything in it, especially this:

I think you can't really talk about "why do Nazis love alternate history" without acknowledging the long history of works both in and out of genre that expliclty or implicitly glorify the Nazi and its contemporary fascist states as superior societies of superior efficiencies to democratic ones

Final weekend it is!

ARISE! Arise, writers of Ottawa !
Fell counts awake, typed and scripted!
Keys shall be shaken, wrists be bandaged!
Three words days, three long days ere december rises!
Write now! Write now!
Write for ruin and the book’s ending!

Dear characters. When I started this story, I set ONE rule. One. It's a journal/after-the-fact-musing type of story. So, no dialogue. When conversation happens, the important bits get summarized and the story moves on.

One. Simple. Rule.

It's very weird playing Clues by Sam when one of the Columns has ,next to each other, your namesake, your brother in law's namesake, and your nephew's name sake.

I mean, not that the CAQ understands any of this or its laws are in any way good, but I would argue that secularism and laïcité, while both manifestations of separation of church and state are *not* the same - that they are in fact almost polar opposites approach to that basic principles.
The Quebec gov never quite got what secularism is. The state is to show no religious preference, that's it. It's not an atheist state and the people in the state are never going be secular in that sense. Everyone has a preference when it comes to religion or lack thereof, or politics, or celery. 1/2
Among the things in this new 'secularism' (definitely NOT anti brown people) bill in QC is a prohibition on public institutions offering only 'religious' meals like halal. There must be an alternative offered.

Wtf is the problem? Halal is just food a certain way.

IMO the weird exception some supposed leftists seem to make for condemning-the-theft-of-labor-except-art-lol-steal-that-shit is just a weird intersection with puritan "if you enjoy yourself, it's not a real job" brainworms.

"fun" job = member of the leisure class (ROFL) = fair game. Somehow.
Honestly, people calling creators the "petite bourgeoisie" makes me want to snap.

We're working folk. And we work really hard. For next to nothing.

We're not lounging around eating bonbons. We're trying to figure out how we're going to be able to pay rent next month.

I'm kind of done being all like "Good riddance to a bad year" at the end of the year, because at this point I know perfectly well that I'll be at "man I miss last year" before January is even over.

I see the book piracy discourse is going around again and all I can say is I know more than one writer producing acclaimed work that is considering jacking it in or reducing the amount they write because they don't make to justify it vs a job job.

It's not only piracy, but piracy is costing us art.

As I was explaining to someone, how on earth is your teen supposed to responsibly handle a change from "no internet" to "internet" as they turn 18?
A lot of people who ban the internet are just hoping to not deal with the problem as opposed to talking about safety, content issues etc
Society either treats teens as precious innocents who should know nothing of the adult world (when it comes to banning books and internet access) or as grown adults, but only in the context of criminalizing or sexualizing them.

Not so related to the commentary itself per se, but the image made me suddenly realize how Darmok, yes, the TNG episode, is actually, from Picard's perspective, a pretty solid metaphor for autistic people trying to communicate with allistics.
Is this a thing people think? That asking WTF you are talking about when you can't string together words to actually say what you mean makes others autistic? No, friend, it makes you an inarticulate dope.

A *million* people.

Lawn darts were banned forever in Canada after like 50 people got injured.

Any company not run by absolute ghouls would shut this thing down. Governments should be banning the fuck out of it.
Panera’s moderately caffeinated lemonade was loosely associated with 2 deaths before it was taken off market.

This article alone has 4 examples of ChatGPT encouraging young people to commit suicide, and OpenAI’s own public stats estimate over a million users discuss suicide with ChatGPT each week.
I fully believe in the corporate death penalty and believe we would be a better world if OpenAI lost its corporate charter and was forcibly dissolved.

virtue signalling is good actually
Performative decency is actually *so* important for this reason.

It tricks the 10% of ghouls into thinking that there are only 1% of ghouls.

And it makes the 30% of people that don't care one way or another follow the mostly decent crowd

people hate hearing this but it's 100% true, creating a huge pay gap between political leaders, their staffs, and other elites is a recipe for corruption. of course the flip side of that is taxes on the rich should be jacked way the hell up
The Mayor of New York only makes $260k. I bet there are police that make more than that in NY with overtime.

We need to pay elected leaders more money and stop pretending it's some sort of calling. They're managing hundreds of billions of dollars in investments and millions of people's lives.
