Yes hello if you would enjoy reading a story about a female version of James Bond taking on a Lovecraftian death cult in 19th century London then you might like my most recent book, 'Easter Pinkerton and the Case of the Heretic Blood'.

... there's also a sword cane.

Star Wars Lego Advent Calendar, Day 5: Heyyyy, you want me to change the air filter and do the plugs while I’m getting the evil out of your droid?

As long as I got him up in the chair anyway, right?

I made a run out for supplies and when I got home was a bit confused to see absolutely zero birds at any of the feeders.

Then I saw the Cooper's hawk sitting on the fence.

Ah. Hello, murderbird friend.

Huh, turns out having your body match your gender identity has significant mental health benefits.

So weird.

Ok so I've been sick this week (sinus infection) and have missed some class. Normally when this happens my students are (of course) delighted.

Last night I got an email from one of the students in my current events class saying that they hoped we'd still have our final class tomorrow...

I've been watching Stargate while I've been sick this week and I forgot that there's an episode with Armin Shimmerman in it.

Man, with the SGC's eagerness to trade for new technology, Quark would have taken them to the cleaners for a box of magic beans.

Star Wars Lego Advent Calendar, Day 3: It’s Sith-infested C-3P0!

A friend turning homicidally evil because of the demands placed upon them is the real lesson of the holiday season.

I will always hear the Raccoon Dance music from 'The Great Outdoors' when seeing clips of raccoons doing their thing.
Timeline cleanse, please enjoy a minute with the local raccoons.

Frog knocked at Toad’s door. “Toad, wake up,” he cried. “Come out and see how wonderful the winter is!”

“I will not,” said Toad. “I am in my warm bed.”

Star Wars Lego Advent Calendar, Day 2: A workstation for yesterday’s droid mechanic, including a giant cup of coffee.

So I heard via my sister who works in a high school about a kid who they’ve been having trouble getting to read things but picked up my ‘King in Darkness’ and enjoyed it a lot.

Yeah, I’ll take that.

Star Wars Lego Advent Calendar, Day 1: this lil droid mechanic guy has no idea how much danger he is in from cats.

What kind of team do you need to assemble for a snail heist, I wonder?

Excellent, clear analysis.

In recent days, information has surfaced that provides what appears to be a textbook example of an unlawful order that could have—and should have—been refused.

The timescale of these creatures always puts things in perspective.

10 million years of Allosaurus?

Hell, the world won't even notice I was ever here at all.

(Also if I ever have a short fiction collection, 10 million years of Allosaurus would be a good title)
Allosaurus was around about 155 million years ago, back in the Late Jurassic, and they roamed around for about 10 million years before they went extinct.

The first flowering plants, or angiosperms, didn’t appear until about 130 million years ago, in the Early Cretaceous.

In other news what had been just a little nagging soreness in one knee hurts so bad this morning that the pain woke me.

I had just really hit a good groove with the post-summer running and this is incredibly frustrating/discouraging.

Also painful.

Fuck.

I have been reading all the "students these days" threads from various sides and I have an essay's worth of thoughts -- there's a lot of complexity and heterogeneity that is hard to communicate on social media. There are a couple of things I will say here though. 1/

To me a big part of this is how we've constructed education as a transaction: I take the course to get the credit, the diploma, that gets me the job. It's often not 'to learn about X', just - give me the tick for this box, please.

Fixing this will require huge effort, if we decide it's a problem.
An issue we're seeing at all levels of university is that many students are simply refusing to do *anything*. They aren't reading the syllabus, aren't following assignment guidelines, aren't engaging with material, ignoring deadlines. And this might seem like old news, but it truly has ramped up.

Made it back to the climbing gym for the first time in a while.

Very annoying that my brain keeps finding ways to persuade me not to do things that I always feel better for having done.

Stupid brain.
