Microwaving is the best way to cook corn. It steams in the husk w/o boiling away sugars, the silk slides off w/o having to be picked off in strands & anyone watching is impressed AF.
Up to 3 fit in a triangle at once. Use 3-4 minutes an ear, rotating them along their axis once so they cook evenly.

“We’re crushing the Republicans in every poll and over performing by double digits in every election, especially when we point out how horrible Republicans are behaving.”

“Hey, what if we ignore all that and pretend we’re selling management consulting services?”

Just hear me out: maybe the Democratic Party’s problem is that the party leadership is full of people incapable of realizing that Matt Yglesias has terrible political instincts.

One of my favorite jokes from Futurama was Bender saying he needed a calculator, Fry pointing out that Bender IS a calculator, and Bender scoffing “I need a GOOD calculator.”

Good thread.
When I see LLMs pitched as a guaranteed productivity tool for software engineering, the is the counterweight I keep trying to get people to seriously engage with and not handwave away is the future cost, and “oh everything tech gets cheaper” isn’t an answer. Services don’t and LLMs are a service.

It’s baffling to me how many people whose careers came up in the era of loss-leading hyper growth services that stopped being “cheap” post-IPO seem to think that the LLM industry using the same playbook are angling for a different outcome. Why? Why would you ever think that?

As an undergraduate I attended a presentation on the huge economic impact of a proposed pedestrian overpass across the middle of a busy street on campus.

I also wanted it built but asked how their key predictions were supported. Got glared at by admin & shot down unanswered. It was so obviously BS.
It's not that consultant models are implemented wrong or are biased, it's that it's not possible for them to do what people think they do. It's just ex-post motivated reasoning. Confusing "economic impact studies" with actual economics is like confusing astrology and astronomy.

It's time to stop pretending that these are good-faith estimates that are exaggerating or being abused on the margin. Projecting the "fiscal impact" of a stadium over a 30-year lease is a fool's errand. If you disagree, show me one done right.

From what I’ve tasted of desire
I'd almost rather end in fire.
But when I guess at how we'll stop
I've seen enough of creeping crud
To say we'll grind down, trapped in slop
Instead of blood,
Or fire,
Or ice.

Me, an old hetero white male engineer eagerly discussing and recommending romance novels without shame if they’re by Mia Sosa, Emily Henry, Abby Jimenez, Talia Hibbert or Lily Chu.

Cara Bastone? I read’em but
I also like some novels by Cara Bastone but I can never recommend any of her books because the titles are always so shmaltzy and stereotypical that they’re too embarrassing to mention.

Remember, the big argument for AI in the arts is that these “artists” have ideas, hundreds of ideas, thousands, all that was stopping them was the hoards of gatekeeping musicians, writers, illustrators… and not that they were lazy and didn’t want to put in the work.

So I've been teaching a themed intro to literature course on romance novels, and I want to set up a lending library in my office because my institution's romance holdings are terrible.

I'm hitting a used book store today to stock up. What is the one book I MUST add to my list?
