So I can finally share my vague publishing news with you: I wrote an academic adventure romance.
a screenshot from Publishers Marketplace reading, “Author of BAD REPUTATION and CHICK MAGNET, Emma Barry’s YOU, ME, & THE CONSPIRACY, pitched as an academic adventure romance a la National Treasure with more spice, in which two history professors uncover a revolutionary conspiracy and secret society that they must expose—or risk becoming its latest victims all while fighting their growing attraction to Norma Perez-Hernandez at Atria, at auction, in a two-book deal, for publication in Fall of 2026, by Sarah Younger at the Nancy Yost Literary Agency (world).”

and Brando just absolutely commands everyone's attention in every scene (and he doesn't get many). on this viewing, I noticed how Brando's voice gets frailer as the movie goes on. at the vocal level alone, it's a stunning performance.

I 100% would've let young Pacino ruin my life. it's no surprise to me that he and Keaton had an IRL affair while making those movies. the sleek way he moves, the intensity of his gaze, the fact that he's not chewing the scenery (the way he became prone to do later on), all so very sigh.

I haven't seen this one; I must investigate!

We ended up watching the first Godfather movie, and she's so excellent in that final scene: her relief at Michael saying he didn't kill his BIL, and then her realization and dread that he did. I haven't seen Mrs. Soffel (though...Mel). and yeah, Keaton is iconic in Annie Hall.

My guess is that it's an interesting time capsule, if a bit dated now

I have such distinct memories of stealing this book from my mom because it had /gasp/ the f word in it.

I haven't seen that one in years. I did write a paper in college about second wave feminist and backlash films about motherhood, and I wrote about it

I have a real fondness for Reds despite the fact that it's objectively bad. But she's great in it.

For tonight's family movie night, we have to pick a Diane Keaton flick, obvs. What's your favorite?

this actually makes a lot of sense to me.

YUP. that's my observation too.

there are so many "I'm an iconoclast" types in history!

I dunno, other than 2 years on Capitol Hill, I've spent my entire adult life in university classrooms, and I've never experienced a dearth of conservative points of view.
authoremmabarry.bsky.social
economics and philosophy departments, IMHO, are filled with conservatives. and I know lots of "socially liberal, economically conservative" types in the sciences and engineering. and a film professor once threw a copy of the constitution in my face (literally) during a class fight about abortion.

lack of a backbone, lol.

they should get middle school teachers to moderate these things. they know how to control a room.

I absolutely understand...but the summary also doesn't capture the full banana pants of it. I don't really like Spanberger (I would've preferred a less centrist candidate), but I have no idea how she maintained her composure.
authoremmabarry.bsky.social
the debate moderators made absolutely no attempt to rein her in or enforce the rules, and as a result, no one learned anything about either candidate. except that one of them is very shouty and completely outside the mainstream.

I don't know that I recommend watching a decent sized clip, but just as with Trump, only hearing 10 seconds of it (or reading a summary) glosses over how absolutely bizarre it was. I have never seen anyone be as deeply weird in a political debate Earle-Sears was.

I will never stop marveling at how excreble American journalism has become. There is just an absolute unwillingness to describe things accurately. If we can't call a spade a spade, I don't know how we fix things or even have a country.

I only watched about 5 minutes of last night's VA gubernatorial debate, but all the coverage I've read comes nowhere close to capturing how unhinged one of the candidate's performances was.

I made a scrambled egg for breakfast, and it looked so *weird.* And I stared at it and stared at it, trying to figure out why, and eventually it dawned on me: my chickens are molting, and so this was a grocery store egg. That was why the yoke was so pale.

I used to order from Boden a lot, but I stopped because it felt as if the quality declined while the prices stayed the same. the patterns are always super cute, though!
