I’m seeing lots of people on here misunderstand the purpose of ICE watch.

It’s de-escalation. And it’s grounded in the social science of violence. 🧵

Yeah man all my friends in Minnesota are buying high viz vests and forming human chains at class dismissals because ICE is targeting and tear gassing schools. I wonder why parents would want information about that.
what the fuck are we doing here, @cnn.com?

THREAD. This can be an important educational moment for progressive people who don't work in or study the punishment bureaucracy. Having spent 20 years in it--and just publishing a book on exactly this topic--I can say that reality works in the opposite way that Jamelle assumes.
maybe an unpopular position on this website but i think the moderate dem focus on ICE training can be, with political pressure, the pathway to more fundamental reforms. rhetorically it is not too hard to move from “more training” to “turns out they’re untrainable and we have to start all over.”

sure, they’ve dismantled the FDA, CDC, EPA, hell even the department of education, but I’ll be damned if I try to abolish ice

Third Way is a fascist organization lmao
ICE may be shooting people in the face, sending people to concentration camps, and illegally occupying our cities but, apparently, the Democrats think saying, "abolish ICE" is "emotional" and politically "lethal."

Rhetoric about stuff like "training" has, time and again, in dozens of contexts that I studied, had precisely the opposite effect on the approach of liberals to addressing the violence, lawlessness, and ineffectiveness of the punishment bureaucracy. Jamelle, we should have a public chat about this!

when ICE asks you questions about your neighbors, you've never met your neighbors in your life. you've never even seen them from afar. neighbors? what neighbors?
ICE is targeting Hmong families in St. Paul as they go door to door looking for people to kidnap. they’re asking “do you have any Asian neighbors”

It’s wild that Democrats are still negotiating their little appropriations bills as though everything is normal and Republicans won’t vote unilaterally to break the deals when Trump asks.

this is wildly illegal and the courts will rule it such, but congressional democrats should be thinking long and hard about the terms under which they will agree to continue funding this government

This is one of those things that sounds like a point until you think about it for 10 seconds. Everyone who serves in ICE is already being released into the wild when they retire, or for that matter at the end of each shift. Not abolishing ICE just makes the problem worse.
It’s worth considering that an overnight dismantling of ICE in 2029 would release into the wild a whole herd of specialists in violence with scant other marketable skills.

Let me give you a thought experiment:

Imagine not just a ban on qualified immunity for authority, but a reversal; a new legal framework, under which authority bears greater responsibility than civilians in matters involving force—as it should.

seriously these results are a roadmap to demands for the upcoming budget battle: criminal liability if they break the law, no masks and mandatory IDs, no new funding and clawing back as much as last year’s funding as possible.

Some people seem convinced anything other than "It's over, there is no way to stop these fascists" is naive and ignorant.

But please remember: While the people who control the levers of state power are lawless and cruel, they are not omnipotent. Obscuring that distinction is an act of defeatism.
A regime driven by the desire to create social media content for their hardcore fans on the extreme Right.

It is an immensely dangerous situation. But I don't think this cruel spectacle is an effective way to consolidate authoritarian rule.
"But more fundamentally, ICE is violence-prone because its main purpose has become theatrical. Under present leadership, ICE is less a law-enforcement agency than it is a content creator."

As others have noted, "Abolish ICE" is in positive territory without Democrats even pushing the message. If they actually leaned into this, they could easily move that number much higher.
BTW, while "Abolish ICE?" is currently polling at 46/43, the same weekly poll had "Abolish the Department of Education?" at 28% support, 58% opposed before Trump did it anyway.

These aren't normal times for politics, but even if they were, it's so clear that Democrats either don't know how to do politics or don't want to. Their position on the board is "the president is hated and his goon forces are despised" and they seem at wit's end how to message from that position.
