Not that there's a bunch of us, but I think a contingent of feds on here have been incentivized to just block 50% of the users here tonight, because man "you should eat shit indefinitely for undetermined reasons so I can poast about The Revolution" is a taek I guess, but not one I want to see
I, a 15-year career federal employee, am responsible for ACA subsidies being taken away.

Not the tens of millions of people who voted to give Donald Trump's Republican Party control of the American government, no, they're blameless victims. It's my fault and I should suffer for it.

fuck this shit.

Ok. So what exactly was everyone expecting the Ds to get out of this shutdown? A) the Rs were never going to extend ACA subsidies, B) they were never going to abolish the filibuster, and C) and no matter what was negotiated Trump was never going to follow it, and D) Trump was never ever going to

Yes. Frankly the Ds had to cave at some point. And this will have to go back to the House and Johnson way just refuse to reconvene.
any bsky poaster have a theory of victory aligned with keeping the govt shutdown indefinitely I'm all ears, because again I think I've got a history that's pretty indicative I'm more than supportive of COAs that fuck me over personally if there's a viable path to an achievable end state
Okay so again, you gonna forgo your income for another 13 months?

Because you're asking me and a couple million of your fellow citizens to do that, and I don't think it's too much to ask for a plausible theory of victory aligned with that COA

Agree with this. Fundamentally, it was highly unlikely to happen, what was most important was timing. Idk, if this is the right time or not, but at some point the Ds had to fold.
One other thing about subsidies is that the fact that this is the deal they arrived at right now probably means that there was close to zero (maybe just straight up actual zero) movement from republicans on subsidies despite polls, despite SNAP, despite elections.

There is a reason officers and NCOs were allowed to very literally shoot people, on the spot who, panicked and broke ranks in battle.
i mean we need to suck it up because there’s a war to win. panicking and breaking ranks in a war is more dishonorable by far than retreating is

My son Seamus died 15 years ago today. He was killed by a careless driver in a crosswalk.

He walked at 9 months, almost as if he knew he wouldn’t have much time. His favorite thing to do was throw rocks into water. He loved the moon. He called butterflies “buddy buddies.” I miss him every day.

Trade offs have to be made. Sometimes you've just got to sacrifice the safety of American commercial aviation on the eve of a mass travel holiday in order to keep the neediest people unfed and uninsured
"We have loss of separation in the airspace. Those numbers are going up. More ground incursions. I have more complaints coming into the FAA from pilots who are saying that air traffic controllers are not as responsive. They seem stressed or they're not using the appropriate language..."

To drive this home a little more: the belief that everyone in the 1950s had the same standard of living as the Cleaver family in "Leave It To Beaver" is every bit as anachronistic as the belief that everyone in 19th-century England lived like Elizabeth Bennett did in *Pride and Prejudice*.
15 percent of American homes lacked indoor plumbing in 1960.

The idea that everyone in 1955 America lived in a split-level suburban home with two cars and three kids and one income is, quite simply, a fantasy borne of media consumption.

Something not really being spoken about in the moment is that with SNAP gone (possibly for good), the more people 'meet the moment' and help each other out, the more it undermines the authoritarian plans this regime we're living under has.

If you got a call like that you’d immediately think it was a scammer
i don’t think the main problem with the american church is “too many of them refuse to be scammed by a lady who is obviously lying.”
There is a lady on TikTok pretending to have a baby that has gone without formula all night — she is calling churches around the country to ask if they can help.

Some of them are really embarrassing themselves. Especially the mega-churches.

People wildly overestimate the economic security experienced by past generations. There's no period in American history where significant numbers of young people were just handed high paying jobs. Nostalgia for a time that never existed is a huge problem.
Why Nikki Haley’s son went radical: His generation inherited insecurity.

I profile Nalin Haley, a fascinating young man, who I believe will likely play an important role in conservative politics in years to come.

It’s very distressing to see luddites getting rehabilitated by elements of the left. They were basically the coal miners of their day. They didn’t want retraining they wanted technology and progress to stop so they could keep their jobs.
