(For the record I support deploying the military against the AI industry for laughs, not because it is a necessity for survival.)

also IF the AI doomerism was correct and we are in the process of building literal Skynet the ONLY ethical way forward would be to deploy lethal military violence against the AI industry and it's researchers worldwide.

If you aren't suggesting that, you don't believe this is end-the-world serious.
I understand why people are exhausted by AI hype, and why those of us squarely in the corner of "human dignity uber alles" see AI doomerism as self-serving hype, but I *really* think people on the left broadly need to start thinking seriously about the possibiltiy of the hype being...true.

I feel so bad for the devs, both for getting fired so quickly and for what I can only imagine are the psychological ramifications of spending years working on a game in such a fickle genre with so many high profile failures to the point where I have to imagine this outcome must have felt inevitable
Wildlight (Highguard) lays off staff according to a LinkedIn post

"Unfortunately, along with most of the team at Wildlight, I was laid off today.

This one really stings as there was a lot of unreleased content I was really looking forward to that I and others designed for Highguard."

your vote has weight outside of election day. regardless of how you end up voting, until then you can bargain with it. the lesser evils are watching you, if you promise your vote for nothing you'll get nothing. say you wont vote for bad candidates. say you'll only vote for policies you like

some people have an intense, I think harmful, impulse to be Reasonable in a vague sense – not to take stances guided by logic or empathy but to simply find some notional nuanced middle ground they can occupy by default
Once again: people are angry for very good reason, and this brand of post is perhaps one of the most tedious and bewildering. Practically every social media platform is rabidly pro-‘AI’ so are govts, academia, companies. This one small space being critical of AI is okay, I think.

highly doubt any of this is true for the record. they said the same thing about UK and Australian age verification and i know people in their forties who discord couldn't infer were of age. don't buy it
Discord has posted updated clarification:

-Discord is not requiring everyone to complete a face scan or upload an ID to use Discord
-The vast majority of people can continue using Discord exactly as they do today, without ever being asked to confirm their age

A thing to remember about these people is they're *both* violent authoritarians *and* incredibly bad at basic stuff. It can be very hard to tell these apart, especially on the fly.

Part of the issue here is that people should not be seeking emotional support from a chatbot, which suggests that we should not be programming them to provide it at all, rather than figuring out the best answer for them to give when it is asked for.
To me the chatbots pose zero interesting questions about the ‘nature of selfhood’ but dozens about the nature of manipulation. Here the Claude team pretends they are programming the robot for ethical responses but they land on one that is false and disingenuous.

i need congress to investigate how Bondi has the Mare of Easttown accent despite growing up in florida
wow -- Bondi throws a fit in response to Nadler's question about how many of Epstein's co-conspirators, if any, she's investigating, aggressively pointing at him and yelling. The hearing then devolves into chaos and Raskin and Bondi start yelling at each other.

The best part of this lie is that "computer" was a grunt-work position for women that involved hand-calculating a *lot* numbers. When computers became machines, women suddenly couldn't math because math jobs paid actual money. Weird how that happened.
the people who spread the “female brains are bad at math and spatial reasoning” lies should be tried at the Hague
Another fun wrinkle from that period (that might still exist): I was good at math and loved it and then my geometry teacher told me that I'd probably struggle because female brains were bad at spatial thinking. I kept loving math & being good at it but assumed that would end so I ended it first.

if by "AI is replacing jobs" you mean "this is the current excuse that companies are making to do layoffs they wanted to do anyway" then sure. if you think that means that AI is actually replacing jobs then I'm gonna need you to stop commenting on current events.

The potential for upheaval is precisely why economic elites wield AI as a weapon to threaten workers, even as we've seen time and again that AI cannot actually replace what humans do.

You can take these dynamics seriously without buying into the framing of the people doing the threatening.
I'm not even saying that's the most *likely* possibility, but it's just very clear that the likelihood of that outcome as increased and even if there's, like, a 1 in 10 change that "AI replaces most to all white collar jobs in 10 years" that's an *enormous* risk to the social order!

This is a media story mostly. No one left in the desicated corporate media wants to write about some new code that helped some nerds be more efficient at science. So they enthusiastically let themselves be conned by the hucksters so they can feel like they're writing a more important story.

If there were going to be flying cars in 15 years that would be a pretty interesting article to read like once. "Damn that's crazy" etc. They wouldn't have an article every single day counting it down.
I don't care about the rational guy "this stuff is actually going to be pretty important one day" takes either. OK! Well let me know when it actually works man.

We don't usually have hear about the run up to any other experimental product every day of our lives for years.
