Since becoming a parent I have not, in fact, understood the parents who say “if you were a parent you’d understand” about vaccine hesitancy. Being in charge of this fragile little miracle has me saying things like “give her all the vaccines. Turn this baby into a pincushion” to doctors

Bet The New Yorker uses an umlaut 🙄

Been working on an overarching theory of human behavior, and here's my current idea: People get super upset when they realize their personal view is not the default, and will do almost anything -- up to and including murder and fascism -- to avoid having to think about that.

"Complexity is a tax" -- YES! A regressive tax that expands beyond tariffs! Americans pay a HUGE amount and don't even realize it. Complexity keeps us stuck and at the mercy of billionaires and corporations who either pay people to figure out the complexity for them or just ignore the rules.
I’ve been reporting about the potential connection of tariffs to small biz job losses. Scott Lincicome of Cato offers this piece discussing not just the high level of the tariffs, but the “truly insane complexity” whose “overall economic cost is likely staggering. “

Especially when the "cheating" doesn't provide an unwarranted advantage. If you get a better grade on a test because of extra time, you needed the extra time! Some people just want to be mean and/or to stigmatize disability so that disabled people are pushed out of public life.
There is no balance required, you just trust people.
Because disabled people are met routinely with mockery, suspicion, neglect, discrimination and outright hate, we do not feed the ableism machine with more suspicion. If a few people get away with ‘cheating the system’ that’s just how things are.
Balancing "no person with a disability should be denied accommodations" with "it's important to discourage non-disabled people from pretending to be disabled to take advantage of these accommodations" is really difficult and I don't have a great answer for what anyone should do about it.

On top of the fact that Louis CK is garbage and shouldn't get attention, that use of the umlaut is technically correct but esoteric and pretentious as hell. Get bent, New Yorker.
When a cancelled performer reënters the culture, we expect them to offer us a great work, channelling their newfound clarity into the finest art they’ve ever made. With his new comedy show and début novel, has Louis C.K. met the bar?

Louis C.K.’s Next Chapter
In a new standup special, and a début novel, the comedian navigates murky, post-#MeToo terrain: not quite exiled, not quite welcomed back.

Lord, no. Pie is a texture nightmare with only a few exceptions. Cake can also be terrible but it is the delivery system for buttercream frosting so it gets a pass.
Actually, all pie is good. Cake, however, runs the gamut from absolute ecstasy to utter dogshit.

The mustache backstory!!! So bad.
“Although I’d been told I was just in remission, I really thought I was cured after they did that godawful adaptation of Death on the Nile where they gave Poirot’s moustache its own backstory. I didn’t even want to re-read the book to point out all the ways they’d ruined it.”

My biggest problem with means-testing besides the inefficiencies is that it doesn't stop The Rich, it stops The Just Barely Getting By. The group who "can afford it" is MUCH smaller than people think.
Periodically I see people justifying means-testing to ensure The Rich don't get stuff for free when they can afford it.

I see the logic, but we can just tax them more.

Plus, the BIGGEST thing not means-testing solves is

*deep breath*

IT STOPS RICH PEOPLE FINANCIALLY-ABUSING THEIR KIDS ANYMORE.
