🧵 As the cold spell comes to an end with black ice, Hamburg doing what Hamburg does best: community, resilience, ...building small snowpeople. By everyone, for everyone. After someone squashed those on the bridge, people were back the next day & replaced them.

My kind of people.

- Medieval people washed regularly, drank water, and didn’t have rotten teeth
- WW1 did not end in 1918
- Queen Victoria was a horndog
- Ancient Egyptians invented Egyptology by excavating their own ancient monuments
- We know more about Shakespeare than many other famous Tudors

Here’s a fun top five: things that are consensus among historians but are essentially unknown by the public. Richard I, a bad king of England. Roman Empire, fell in 1453. Paul, more important than Jesus. Witch burning, a modern phenomenon not a medieval one. Britain last invaded in 1688. Yours?
As someone who wrote a dissertation on that damnable Frenchman; one can only hope.

50 runaway sheep ram-paged through a German supermarket in rural Baa-varia, causing shear mania on Monday morning.

After breaking away from their 500-strong herd, the brazen sheep spent 20 minutes milling around in the Penny supermarket before ewe-turning and seeing themselves out.

Otherworldly. Deep in the ocean depths, there is a magical world of creatures waiting to be discovered.

Our Solar System is orbiting the center of our Galaxy at about 220 km/s so in 2025 we collectively traveled something like 7 billion kilometers across the Milky Way. Once in a while, when you have a moment, it’s worthwhile to take a look around, see where you are, and appreciate how far you’ve come.

And as we're on the subject of cross-linguistic puns, I'm re-upping one of my nonsense poems, which is called GUT REACTION?...
English weather is wet
But German weather is Wetter

English children are kind
But German kids are Kinder

English mothers mumble
But German mothers Mutter

The English shout the word people
But Germans just quietly Menschen it

And English sausages can be bad
But a German sausage is the Wurst

I pick this as a minor celebrity interaction. The time I excitedly told a busload of people about spring-loaded duck penises and discovered Boba Fett was sitting behind me still looms very large in my mind.

(Yes, I would have done it anyway, but I might not have made the hand gestures.)
