In country after country, far-right populists offer easy solutions to often non-existent crises, fuelling xenophobia, jealousy, rage for votes. Once in power, they (ab)use their position, serve themselves, & keep people angry while solving nothing. Those who have not yet realised this don't want to.

For years around & after Brexit, I struggled with the fact that returning to the UK for good was going to be difficult. (Since then, both Tory & Labour govts have made it impossible.) When I see messages like Sue's, I think it might have been a blessing. If only Scotland's independence came through.
I went to B&Q to get a Xmas tree yesterday with the kid and you drive through a bit of Bristol where the lampposts are absolutely covered in flags and it's really really grim. I don't understand why the council doesn't do something about it.

There's something very charming about self-depricating humour. It's modest, cheeky, good-natured. It shows we don't take ourselves too seriously or more important than others. It shows we know we're not perfect, well aware of our weaknesses. With humour, it builds bridges.

Trump removing free access to National Parks on Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Juneteenth and switching it to his birthday - all by executive order - is so ... Trump. Mean, spiteful, and jealous. Pathetic. And so incredibly small.

It's a year today that Assad was overthrown. In front of the Arabic corner store Syrian men gather, hug, banter. Everyone's excited & cheerful. Big smiles. Still palpable relief. Some late shopping for meals to celebrate. The owner gives me 6kg tomatoes for 2.50€. I insist to pay more - no chance.

Ein kleiner arabischer Laden. An der Kasse scherzen Kunde & Eigentümer. Ein 20er wandert hin & her. Ich halte die Hand auf. Sie lachen. Der Kunde dreht sich um & sagt strahlend: „Heute ist in Syrien Feiertag!“ Ich sage: „Ja, es ist ein Jahr her.“ Überrascht & glücklich nickt er. „Genau! Ein Jahr.“ 🫶

An Arabic corner shop. The checkout. A customer & the owner banter; they jokingly hand the same 20 back & forth. So I hold my hand out. They laugh. The customer turns around & says, beaming, "Today's a holiday in Syria!" I say, "Yes, it's been a year." Surprised & happy he nods, "Exactly! A year." 🫶

Maybe the humiliation of her time in office was too great & comprehensive to face. In denial, Liz Truss keeps coming back for more. A candid article in the Mirror showing the ridicule she still attracts & the absurdity or her current politics. I wish someone would protect her from herself.

As much as I'd love to see him cross, I believe Starmer's too timid, tied to Blue Labour & to Labour's red (campaign) lines to cross. It will take a new, braver person to do this. #Brexit
