The “Debate Me Bro” Grift: How Trolls Weaponized The Marketplace Of Ideas
Among the attempts to create hagiographic eulogies of Charlie Kirk, I’ve seen more than a few people suggest that Kirk should be respected for being willing to talk to “those who disagree with him” as a sign that he was engaging in good faith. Perhaps the perfect example of this is Ezra Klein’s silly eulogy claiming that Kirk was “

The lies' laughable implausibility is a feature, not a bug.

They're not trying to convince discerning, skeptical, fact-based people. They're trying to give supporters a fantasy that validates their feelings and creates a sort of loyalty test, while flaunting the absurdity in everyone else's faces.

I am not being dramatic. I am not being hyperbolic. I am being completely and totally honest with you. The politicization of the Fed spells trouble for the GLOBAL economy. #econsky #blacksky

The adamant elite refusal to call bullshit is a big part of How We Got Here.

The prevailing cultural attitude for years is you must not, under any circumstances, treat anything as bad faith. You are obligated to find some reasonable idea and engage with that, even if you distort to get there.

Pointing out how safe DC by showing the low crime rates isn’t going to convince conservatives because “people breaking the actual law” isn’t what they mean by “crime”. To them, “crime” includes merely seeing black people, unhoused people, and anyone else the bigots clutch pearls about as “crime”

I want to do a 🧵 about the Sidney Sweeney thing, because it's *extremely* revealing & educational.

First, to be clear: I could not give less of a shit about the details -- the ad, the rhetoric, the jeans, her boobs, whatever. Good lord, who cares.

Let's look at the *structure* of the episode.

A more perfect description of "AI" does not exist.

The technology isn't the problem. The douchebroligarchs, whose claims about what it can or can't do are fundementally false, are the problem.

It's like the dotcom bubble of the late 90s, only ripped to the gills on Adderall and ketamine.
One can be open to future (& even present) utility of LLMs, dynamic interfaces, etc. while also saying unambiguously we are in a speculative bubble.

AI is currently more marketing term than descriptor of technical innovation. And OpenAI, Palintr, & many other brands are socially destructive.

I think ICE is in a thuggery spiral. You’ll see more gratuitous uses of force, leading to more people filming/protesting it, leading to more thuggery in reaction.
NEW: We’ve documented nearly 50 incidents of immigration officers shattering car windows to make arrests — a tactic experts say was rarely used before Trump took office.

ICE claims officers use a “minimum amount of force.”

You can judge for yourself.

Good on everyone for seeing through the bullshit. We know their playbook by now, and oughta act like it.
you know what, I’m impressed, we really did mostly do the right thing here and it doesn’t seem to have resulted in any sort of sustained harassment campaign because he just got blocked to oblivion

Hint: it’s because those Democrats were also bought off by the crypto industry, and they have no greater principles than self-enrichment.
JFC. Even after what the Trump regime has done to LA, the state of California, both Schiff & Padilla (!!) decided to vote with Republicans to give Trump a massive gift on crypto.

Same goes for Gillibrand and NY.

Also shame on Booker, Kim & Warnock.

A disgraceful list - especially this week.

My fellow white people, a thread:

You’re used to attending protests that are planned on Facebook weeks in advance, with posts like “wear green” and “who can bring water?”

They’re safe. They have permits and police protection.

That’s not what you’ve been seeing the past few days.

Authoritarian cycles all have shared traits, and one of them is that a reactionary movement emerges promising false solutions to real problems and the liberal opposition continues to conservatively cling to the systems that created those problems even as things get worse and worse and worse.
