In case you thought the news from the US wasn’t disturbing enough, ICE is purchasing massive warehouses to hold those they abduct.

ICE Begins Buying ‘Mega’ Warehouse Detention Centers Across US
Plans for such centers and jails in nearly two dozen communities have sparked protests over suitability, proximity to homes and schools.

Truly horrific mass murder by Iran's regime - systematic killing of likely around 30,000 protesters.
"The injuries we observed demonstrate a brutality without limit – both in scale and in method," including bodies of people shot in the head while hospitalised.
Disappeared bodies, mass burials and ‘30,000 dead’: what is the truth of Iran’s death toll?
Testimony from medics, morgue and graveyard staff reveals huge state effort to conceal systematic killing of protesters

81 years ago today, Auschwitz was liberated.

More than ever, we must remember. Remembrance is a responsibility.

On Holocaust Memorial Day, we remember the victims, honour the survivors, and reflect on what happens when good people do nothing.

This is amazing - a mushroom that if not cooked properly gives people a very specific hallucination: "visions of pint-sized, elf-like figures marching under doors, crawling up walls and clinging to furniture."
'They saw them on their dishes when eating': The mushroom making people hallucinate dozens of tiny humans
Only recently described by science, the mysterious mushrooms are found in different parts of the world, but they give people the same exact visions.

Trump administration plans to deport 40 Iranians days after mass killings in Iran
Two of the deportees are gay and are terrified of returning to a country where homosexuality is punishable by death, their lawyer says.

ICE detain yet another minor child—chase him down his own street and tackle him to pavement.

"I am legal! I am legal!" he cries over and over in Spanish.

Agent pins the boy down in snow—he desperately tries to keep his exposed hands from freezing at -25°F wind chill temperature.

One of the best articles we've seen from out-of-town press. Does a good job of covering what isn't getting covered enough and capturing what it feels like on the ground right now... (This is a gift article - lmk if the link doesn't work.)

Also, I want to take an interest in things going on elsewhere in the world, but after starting the day with Minneapolis news and Mad Trump Letter news that’s enough news for one morning thank you.
I think it would be quite nice for me to be able to wake up in the morning and think about my plans for the day, and more broadly about my own little life, instead of immediately having to ponder the overnight actions of The Guy Over There

Sad story here about closure of Uni of Essex Southend campus:

This ought to be a huge national news story. But the quiet dismantling of a key sector barely registers outside HE. Maybe someone will care when the local economies that Unis sustain start to go bust too. Important story from @patrickjack.bsky.social & @timeshighered.bsky.social
Ninety UK universities to have posted accounts so far cut 13,300 jobs last year, spending £303 million on severance pay - sector-wide total clearly going to be well in excess of predicted 10,000. Great reporting by @patrickjack.bsky.social www.timeshighereducation.com/news/pay-spe...
