After 5 years of drought, Tehran's total rainfall this year was just 1mm.
President Masoud Pezeshkian warned that Tehran's water supply could be rationed, and even spoke earlier this month of evacuating the city - unlikely to be feasible but underlining the seriousness of the country's water crisis

Important thread on the role of climate as a threat multiplier in the horrific (and too often overlooked) humanitarian disaster in Sudan.
"What makes Sudan's crisis even more alarming is its invisibility. The world is not watching closely enough"

The Sudanese civil war is creating the world's worst humanitarian disaster with 12 million people now displaced

The Telegraph has just published *yet another* correction to one of its net-zero articles.

By my count, that is now the TWELFTH such correction since Labour won the election (and covers 15 separate articles).

I have now added the latest one to my epic thread which is tracking these corrections...

The energy company obligation (ECO), a levy on bills which funds energy-efficiency schemes for low-income homes has been axed in the Budget.
Unless the funding is replaced *in full* in the government's Warm Homes plan, this will be a disaster for climate action, fuel poverty and jobs.

⚠️ The Warm Homes Plan must plug this gap

The government must urgently set out how ECO will be replaced in the Warm Homes Plan, before jobs are lost due to uncertainty & homes are left cold, damp and hard to heat. It also needs a clear roadmap for achieving both climate & fuel poverty targets.

💵 Less money for fuel poor

Without ECO, the UK is left without a large scale fuel poverty scheme. While £1.5bn is promised under the Warm Homes Plan, it’s a downgrade on the £6.4bn ECO would have spent in the same period. For households this scheme would have supported, this is a huge loss.

👔 Job losses

ECO supports thousands of jobs across Britain, particularly in Scotland. This includes retrofit experts and installers who are vital to ensuring everyone lives in a warmer, safer home. This move will cost jobs and could undermine the UK’s ambitions to improve cold, drafty homes.

The Energy Company Obligation (ECO), an insulation scheme funded through energy bills, has been scrapped.

The latest version faced structural issues and needed an overhaul, but ECO has run for over a decade, supporting a steady supply chain for retrofit businesses.

So, what does this mean?

As the Chancellor is delivering her Budget, can the UK really afford £30 billion on Drax's tree burning?

Discussing a subject close to my heart first on the Sky News newspaper review this morning: Heathrow expansion.

It's simple: there is no way we can have a safe, liveable climate and expand London's airport capacity.

Building the equivalent of the UK's second biggest airport right next to its largest?
Moving the M25?
Increasing noise pollution and air pollution for Londoners?

The UK faces many challenges. Heathrow expansion is not the answer to any of them - and is insanity in a climate crisis.

Most people hear “heat pump” and think of small air-source units at home. But Germany is building one of the world’s largest heat pumps in Mannheim: a 162 MW river-source system using heat from the Rhine.

Big reminder that heat-pumps scale far beyond households — they can decarbonise whole cities.
