Could they turn this around? Maybe. It ain't over.

But the trendline on the 'Trump regime' is bad and the people running it are not very capable.

Meanwhile mass protests suggest the balance of 'street violence' potential is not on the regime's side.

We know this is a bid for authoritarian governance and at this point it is clear it is failing

We know in other countries, such failures generally end with "and then he fled to Russia" or "and then he went to trial" or "and then he and his entire family were murdered."

Why would we be different?

At 10 over 75? Non-zero chance his 'trial' is a note read aloud next to a burn pit.

You know the joke that in some extreme circumstances you 'stop being biology and start being physics'?

There is a point where your politics stop being law and start being history. It is not a good place to be.

The problem with this article is they asked too many lawyers and not enough historians.

As a historian, I'd say the legality of Trump's immunity and pardons depends on how he leaves office.

At 40 over 55 approval? He's immune.

At 25 over 65? He's probably not immune & self-pardons aren't legal.

Many moons ago, we were so hard up for people that recruiters were pushing anyone they could get their hands on through the MEPS doors. I had an E-2 with obvious mental health issues who had to have an NCO verify that he showered on a daily basis. Stop lossed.

Then there's this fucking clown.

The only people people like Weiss have been able to "convert" were the crypto-Nazis, who were always waiting for an excuse to drop their masks.

Going after the charismatic war hero turned literal astronaut who ran after his wife was a victim of political violence is core to the fascist project, though.

All must be inverted. Good must be torn down. Resentment must be stoked. Otherwise “everyone is this way, look what you made me do” fails.
Targeting Kelly is one of those “this is why we’ll win” moments, bc it shows how politically impetuous this admin is.

There’s clearly no adult in the room to say “wait, maybe don’t go after the charismatic war hero turned literal astronaut who ran after his wife was a victim of political violence.”
Mark Kelly: "My wife, Gabby Giffords, meeting with her constituents, shot in the head. Six people killed around her, a horrific thing. She spent six months in the hospital. We know what political violence is and we know what causes it too, The statements that Donald Trump made incites others."

It is so interesting to work in a field where people reflexively code me as far right VetBro.

It’s liberating to rapidly sort my network when people start bragging about vaccine refusals and fleeing Zohran Mamdani. I just sit there and they tell me their secrets.

It’s so wild.

I think it was a bad idea to put people who openly advocate war crimes and champion war criminals in charge of America’s national security apparatus. In particular, those are bad qualities in a Secretary of Defense.

Wow — Senators Van Hollen, Smith, Murphy, Sanders, Warren, Markey, Merkley, Heinrich have created an official internal "Fight Club."

They're challenging Schumer & Gillibrand's leadership, arguing the party is using an old, corporate-friendly playbook insufficient to take on Trump or win elections.

A mayoral candidate saying maybe the city should cover the cost of bus rides gets the full socialism panic treatment before he even tries it.

A sitting president taking billions of dollars worth of shares in private companies gets “I must say, a tad unusual” after it’s been going for nearly a year.

bet you a dollar this will become a vignette in ROTC MS101 "intro to leadership" courses in a couple years
When you draw a platoon leader like Hegseth, it’s your worst nightmare. You just ride it out until he’s gone and gets replaced by someone who isn’t a complete jackass. Only a fool like Trump would put one of them in charge of the entire defense department.

And this is how it's done!

Ukraine and Europe knew there would be no peace deal based on the capitulation ultimatum that Witkoff had poorly translated from Russian, but by engaging with the process they could expose who's the one who doesn't want peace.

It's Russia, always has been Russia.
WAPO: “.. Russia is unlikely to accept changes that the U.S. and #Ukraine are negotiating over in the new peace plan to end the war ..”

This btw is why the defensive crouch that UK and other European broadcasters have fallen into towards the Trump administration is so crazy. Like many counterparts in US media they've convinced themselves that Trump has a mystical link with the American volk when in reality he is now deeply unpopular
Not least because the current US President is rapidly losing popularity and things will look rather different over the coming year. I hope Bregman’s missing line is at least reinserted in the podcast editions of the lecture.

The “savvy” view is usually wrong - both morally but also as analysis. Farage’s views and character are a really important part of why the polls are where they are!
All the supposedly progressive people saying 'Nigel Farage's racism doesn't matter. His fans love it'.

It matters whether the leader of the party leading all the opinion polls is an outright racist. It matters if he called black people 'wogs' and said 'gas them' to Jews. Not everything is a game
