Same trip to the mountains of NC, different waterfall. I can't remember the name of this one, but it was a bit of a scramble above another falls... whose name I also can't remember 😕

Two shots of the same waterfall (Schoolhouse Falls) in the mountains of NC. I'm still not sure which I prefer.

"how can you get more accurate answers" from an LLM? that's like asking "how can you get more love from a prostitute." that's just not the service provided.

Listen, Roko's Basilisk is essentially Calvinist Satan in transhumanist drag. Which implies the existence of transhumanist Calvinism. From which we get to transhumanist salvation-peddling televangelist-style grifters and transhumanist Seven Mountains Mandate Dominionism.

Are we scared yet?

Medicaid covers 60% of all nursing home stays in North Carolina, providing essential support for nearly 35,000 residents. The GOP's reckless budget cuts will devastate these facilities, putting seniors at risk of losing the care they need to survive. NC families deserve better.

this was my exact thought
It is actually pretty astonishing to me that so many of the most devastating and evil policies coming out of the administration so far seems almost pin-point targeted at its various voting demographics.

It's not the worst part, but my mind is blown by Trump confusing the national debt ($36T) with trade deficits.
Trump defends his controversial new tariffs: “Will there be some pain? Yes, maybe (and maybe not!). But we will make America great again, and it will all be worth the price that must be paid.”

I think it was someone on here, maybe @velveteenrabbi.bsky.social who posted something I now can't find about two Zen questions for finding clarity:

1. What is this?
2. What is my work?

The answer to #1, I think most of us are clear on.

The answer to #2 is personal. But probably not "scrolling."

Finally!
Yes, 2025 isn't looking like it will be a great year. Right wing authoritarianism is rising. Global warming continues unabated. The world is as fractured as ever.

But at least we can count on one positive thing: it is the Year of Linux Desktop.

I'm involved in tech hiring. I've interviewed thousands of engineers. And I'd like to tell you about a disturbing trend I've seen in tech in the last 10 years 🧵
great article about the devaluation of absolutely anything where women achieve 50%. which is a thing.

This whole thread is great and also applicable to papers vs posters (which presumably David also teaches). I attended a poster session recently and half of the posters were literally cut and paste blocks of text from the students' papers.
Every year around now, I start to see grad students on social media bemoan that they’re going home for the holidays to a family that doesn’t understand their research, or what they do in general, and it breaks my heart. 🧵 🧪 #SciComm

I was just chasing this down last night - how many "tech" CEOs are actually engineers anymore. Of those you hear about, it's surprisingly few
We should be specific when we say "tech", whether we mean the fascist overlords, or some kid who works at an Apple Store. The folks who organized unions at Amazon and Google are people, too, and are more _tech_ than any of the tycoons.
the only reason that tech was ever remotely left-coded was that in the early 2010s they consciously aligned themselves with what appeared to be the dominant political party. that meant large donations to Dems and nominal gestures toward diversity. as soon as the winds shifted they swung right.
