I'm bored, so let's do this:

One like, one tip to survive in neurotypical society as an autistic or otherwise neurodivergent person.
encephalophagy.bsky.social
Then that conflict-adverse kid grew up to become me, a gremlin who chooses violence every single day of their life, and honestly, love that for myself.
encephalophagy.bsky.social
The only stuff I struggled with was stuff I also struggle with now, i.e. volume control and executive function.

My room was always untidy, but so was the rest of the house, because everyone else living there ALSO had shitty executive function.

Neurodivergence: it runs in the family!

"Should adults curse in front of children?"

Yeah, why not? Surely we just need to tell the kid it's inappropriate to curse and that will be enough to keep them from doing it too, right? You know, as it was for me?

I feel like a lot of my opinions on childrearing are influenced by how well-behaved a child I was, on account of being an anxiety ball terrified of getting in trouble.

Happy coming out day. I’m a genderqueer biromantic asexual. Most often this is someone’s punchline or ignored entirely, because people assume I am a woman married to a man.

There’s a lot wrong with that assumption and the effects!

But the worst is usually the way people react to the asexuality.

Al principio me ha sorprendido que Irlanda no esté en la lista de la media, tienen mucho lavadero de dinero allí. Pero claro, luego he caído: eso no es ni siquiera "ricos viviendo", son directamente empresas.

This.

And let’s face it, there’s so much fan fiction based on the Bible if we call everything that is based on someone else’s work “fan fiction”. But yes, you look back to the original in some of these things and it is like, “whoa, he really did write an au here”.
encephalophagy.bsky.social
Well, here's the thing. The idea that the author owns the story is relatively modern (and arguably a product of modern capitalism).

The Ancient Greek and Romans wrote stories, plays, and poems based on the Iliad. The Divine Comedy included characters from stories written by other authors. 🧵

Thanks to you for reading! I went a bit overboard hahaha
encephalophagy.bsky.social
So the unrealished potential of "Damn, Roy and Riza are so devoted to each other, I want to see that!" (or whatever is your fav ship. Mine was Roy and Havoc :p) drove people to write about romance.
encephalophagy.bsky.social
Okay, but flippancy aside, from what I remember reading FMA about 20 years ago, the manga has well-developed characters who have a lot of chemistry with each other, but we rarely see people act on that romantic tension. Which makes sense, the focus is on the action-driven plot + politicals.
encephalophagy.bsky.social
Hence, the second theory: that people write about what the story lacks.

Which, according to my experience with that fandom back around 2005, was incest.
encephalophagy.bsky.social
Uff, don't get me started. The number of people who think Death of the Author means "Hatsune Miku wrote this!"
encephalophagy.bsky.social
Well, yeah, but that understanding gap has also been used to inspire others to be better.

People will interpret a text according to their own agenda, and some people's agenda is "genocide"

Me acabo de acordar de nuevo de cuando el australiano me preguntó cuándo era nuestro Día de la Independencia. Lo miré muy seria y le dije: «There's no Spanish Independence Day. We were an empire. Other countries celebrate they got independence from us.»

So yeah, you're definitely onto something here!

The second is that people write fic about what is lacking in the source material.

There was a great post that put it like this:
knifeinafistfight:

it’s wild to me how there is literally ZERO correlation between what a piece of media is like and what its fanworks are like. 2014 captain america fans were out there writing poetry and full-on academic papers inside of their fics. sonic the hedgehog and my little pony fandoms are both famous for drawing fetishes you’ve never even heard of. les miserables fans spent most of their energy on college aus. there is literally no consistency or observable pattern and it’s incredible

astrailhads:

#my theory is that fanworks reflect what people found missing in the canon#so like. sonic and mlp. obviously#les miz want les amis to be happy and alive and goofing around#and uh. mcu fans want the mcu to be well-written (via dicaeopolis)

The first is that fandoms that attract the most fanfiction are those with a lot of unrealised potential.

That's why there are tons of Supernatural or Harry Potter fics, but shows like Chernobyl or Fleabag that do live to their full potential have almost no fic, despite their popularity
encephalophagy.bsky.social
It's funny you'd mention this because there are a couple of theories floating around fandom that touch on that!

Ultimately, that's fanfiction: making that explicit.

Exploring the space between what the author meant, what they accidentally said, and the version of the story that makes most sense to us.

And sometimes that means characters doing each other in the butt. It's rad! /end🧵

Who among us hasn't taught themselves a whole other language in order to get off?

This being a thread on the perks of reading various languages, autism, Barthes, three layers of conceptual intention in texts, Harry Potter and porn.

Not to be talking about Harry Potter in 2025, but I just remembered a story I hadn't thought about in years.

Now, before I begin, English is not my native language. However, I've been speaking it fluently since roughly 6 months after I hit puberty for one reason and one reason only:

Porn. 🧵
