I've long wondered about the love and obsession with maverick personalities being idolised and revered in TV, literature and film and yet those same types are largely treated badly or suffer prejudice in real life, because they don't always conform and are seen as difficult.
so another thing that Serpico captures really well is that people with the kind of integrity and stubbornness needed to be dissidents or idealists in corrupt institutions are often kind of hard to get along with.
