This funding is legally required to be disbursed as directed in the budget. It is illegal for this money to be withheld like this. Russell Vought and the entire Trump admin are in violation of the law and need to be prosecuted and the funding released. This is screwing over so many workers!

Today's reprint from Bitch Media is a stunning feature from Alicia Kennedy on the past, present, and future of sugarcane that originally appeared in the Wild issue. It's accompanied by gorgeous original photography.

Many thanks to our members for supporting these archival reprints!

Dr. Alice Ball developed the first effective treatment for leprosy in 1915, well before antibiotics were known. Her work went uncredited for years.

Important to recognize that ICE has not left Minnesota, they are just moving to where they think there is less organizing structure to combat them. They want you to forget. Great coverage as usual by @theverge.com www.theverge.com/policy/87871...
The same day DHS announced the surge would end in Minnesota, ICE activity increased in small towns
The less densely populated areas outside the Twin Cities make it harder for protesters and observers to organize.

Luda Kinok, a Yupik Indigenous activist originally from Chukotka and now living in the U.S., experienced a rollback of freedoms after Perestroika ended in Russia.

She says it feels eerily familiar as she watches democratic institutions erode in the United States.

In incredible news, the European Parliament has voted overwhelmingly for "The Full Recognition Of Trans Women As Women."

Even the center-right European People's Party voted for the declaration.

It will form a foundation for their position at the UN Commission on the Status of Women.

Our latest.
European Parliament Votes Overwhelmingly For "The Full Recognition Of Trans Women As Women"
The resolution, though nonbinding, is a significant shot at those who seek to erode transgender rights on the continent.

I checked the publications dates books that informed my thinking about this kind of tech before it became AI discourse. Books like Artificial Unintelligence, Algorithms of Oppression, Race After Technology, Weapons of Math Destruction: 2016-2019. Unsurprisingly, this observation truly tracks.
I fear that men are about to do what men do. They are about to characterize any sober thinking about power as non-technical and therefore unserious.

We have seen this pattern over and over again in tech criticism. Women and people of color repeatedly lead on understanding tech changes.

Facebook plans to put facial recognition in its glasses and they think we’re too stupid to fight back.

Their internal memo: “We will launch during a dynamic political environment where many civil society groups that we would expect to attack us would have their resources focused on other concerns.”

I have a friend who said, of Starfleet Academy, that this took them out of it - that seeing a person in a wheelchair in the 32nd century seemed unrealistic, since medicine in Star Trek "should be able to cure whatever was wrong with them."

That's not the case, for any number of possible reasons.

No one has seriously said LLMs aren’t important or that AI is categorically junk.

Some of us have said that there is something bigger than tech. It’s called power — governance, civic norms, etc — & refusal is absolutely part of how we think soberly about that power. Who has it & how they use it.

i love the framing of just saying ‘no’.

i think about the early days of FB when they released fields for you to add your demographics. i told my friends, “don’t add that information in your profile”. just because it’s an empty field, doesn’t mean you have to fill it.

refusal is indeed an option.
