Yes. It hurts, especially if you're someone who has cultivated a moral code of nonviolence or only defensive action, to reckon with the idea that sometimes, we MUST be more proactive than merely defense.
One reason many are struggling with these moments is because they've been taught social change/activism tactics revolving around appealing to morals, humanity, and compromise. And now they are facing an opponent that not just refuses but prides themselves on being immoral, inhumane, and unyielding.
