Some longtime followers might remember I used to document old Japanese game demos. I sold most of them off when I moved to Japan, but I kept a few with sentimental value, including this really rare retailer demo for the original Rhythm Tengoku, which I just dug out to put in my office showcase. 😌

Happy 25th birthday, Onimusha! Carving its way though a demon-haunted land for the first time in Japan on 25/01/2001.

I replayed the original PS2 Onimusha a few years or so ago and had a great time with it. Still holds up well with some lovely pre-rendered backgrounds and cool biopunk aesthetics.

The door's now open, yes it's true,
for ports to retro hardware too.
I hope the time's upon us fast.
When Grunty debuts on Dreamcast.

(With Starfox 64 and Mario 64 already running quite beautifully on the console, it would be nice to see someday if it's possible!)

Documents from the development of Suikoden I and II from the 30th anniversary exhibit. It’s always a relief to see that these things are still being kept somewhere.

Sorry Rango, I don't know why there's not been another classic Ridge Racer game with fierce online and single player arcade racing, a dramatic storyline of ambition, rivalry, and passion with rival racing teams, arcade callbacks, and Reiko Nagase AND Ai Fukami.

I want to highlight one of my favorite items in our digital archive:

Shiny Entertainment put out an excessively detailed press kit for MDK with photos of every team member, their office space, developer diaries, concept art, and more

Even when Kei & Yuri are on vacation, there's still a 40% chance of something catching fire or exploding. 🔥

One of the sweet sketches in the guidebook for Anime Con '91, a landmark con in North American anime fandom and in gaining recognition from Japanese studios.

Here's an example of how important those driver CDs are - this is a Sapphire HD 7950, a rebranded AMD Radeon video card with drivers to work with brands of Macs. The driver CD is nowhere to be found. Anyone have it?

People who argue "who cares it's just for kids" all I can say is fuck right off. Kids deserve thoughtful, well-made movies that challenge them just as much as adults do. Kids aren't stupid, and they remember how movies affect them basically forever.
