For Fighting Game Friday, Konami's first 3D fighter, mostly forgotten, probably because it doesn't play particularly great.

BUT, it's got a *great* low-poly anime visual style with a lot of character.

At twilight, under the neon glow of the modern world, Rough and Tumble Punk Fight Girl Mayu Uzaka performs a hurricanrana on blonde hunk Terrific Forelock. Yes, his name is Terrific Forelock. After walloping Mayu in the middle of the street, Beautiful Elf Woman Misa Atago poses with her arms wide, presenting to the defeated player large interface text reading "YOU LOSE". Rough and Tumble Punk Fight Girl Mayu Uzaka is hot-blooded and ready for battle. In close-up her attire becomes more visible: Fingerless leather gloves, denim vest over shredded tee. Spiky hair, pink as fresh bubble gum. Having bested all of her human peers, Rough and Tumble Punk Fight Girl Mayu Uzaka now comes face to face with a gigantic muscled demon straight off of Akira Toriyama's desk. Grinning devilishly, it fills the screen with its imposing mass.

Vivi and Zidane in Cleyra's Inn, the room mostly made out of wood feels comforting Zidane and Garnet in bunk beds, talking at night in Black Mage village's Inn, there's a light giving a gentle glow in the other room Ruby's theatre in Alexandria, she's sitting in a corner of the room lost in her thoughts while Marcus, Blank and Cinna are standing by the stage. I always thought Ruby's hair was blue and that she wore some kind of grey hat but that's actually the opposite. She's cute either way :) Alexandria's synthesis shop, there's plenty of tools, weapons and crates

It is Fighting Game Friday and once again we journey to the land of lesser-known PS1 fighters.

This is a fairly standard fighter, but it has a cast of cool anime girls.

Cool anime girls go a long way, unquestionably.

Grappling Strongwoman Jun Kubota and Corporate Girlboss Reimi Jahana square off in a shady underground boxing ring. It's worker vs. owner in an epic proxy battle for the class war. Free-spirited bandanna-wearing Ninja Girl Chiho Masuda cheerily rams her fist into intrepid Computer Nerd Kaori Yanase, sending her flying across a restaurant. Patrons are aghast. Party Girl with a Heart of Gold Ayako Yuuki is in the club vibing with the girls when Main Character Yuka Takeuchi barges in with her fist cocked and a demon in her eyes. There is severe beef to be dished this night, dear reader. Elegant Assassin Kyoko Kirishima tosses American Playboy Bunny Erina Goldsmith over her shoulder like a sack of flour in the middle of the street, bouncing her off the pavement like a slightly-deflated basketball. Illuminated inside a storefront a man presses up against the window, captivated, zombie-like, by the lady melee.

Excalibur 2555 A.D. (PS1) (1997)

We see our hero Beth, looking a bit confused as she's just been transported through time inside some kind of cave or mine by none other than Merlin the wizard, to stop the evil soldiers of the future from stealing the famed sword Excalibur. She's sporting a blonde hair tied in a low bun, a red shirt with a bit of cleavage showing because it was the style at Arthurian times, wearing no pants and also weilding the largest, thickest sword you've ever seen. It's like Guts' Dragon Slayer sword but if it was only a third as long. It's not about the length, it's how you use it! A look at the same scene but from the original European version of the game (the rest of the screenshots are from the US version because I didn't even know there were any differences at the time of taking the other screenshots). In this original version, Beth has brown hair, looks a little bit angrier, her shirt is green and most importantly wears brown pants and knee high socks, all very Robin Hood like. So the US version had to be sexied-up because that was the only thing wrong with this game and it would surely boost sales. 👀 An injured soldier of the future with a very futuristic orange shirt and a Tiffany Blue vest, fingerless gloves (not because it's cool but because he don't have no fingers, he's too low poly for that), holding a gun and wearing a bandage on his head that's positioned a bit too high and then they just added more hair above it so his head is very elongated and his face very smushed. Hey, maybe that's a side effect of future people living in these mines so gravity has pulled their faces down more. I have to mention that all of the textures in this game look like they've been drawn in paint, and though there's nothing wrong with that, it does give off a more amateurish look, especially to the character faces, creating a unique art style that only Ringo Starr could love. Beth encountering a giant red scorpion (no not a RAD scorpion, though it's as big as one) and proceeding to slice and dice it with her chub sword. It's one of the many, many giant scorpions and spiders you fight in this game.

the intro to the game on a PC CRT monitor looks like we're underwater! an enemy underwater with a mine on a chain. i was scared the first time i saw it in the distance! a tree that looks like it was uprooted in a cataclysm and is now horizontal up in a haze. i don't know why, but i liked seeing this in the game on a CRT, it's like a blending showcase. very smooth. i mean, the game has anti-aliasing and upscaling, but still

Mighty strongman Karnov, faced with a bemused fishman, hurls himself at the slippery foe, grunting and belching out three full fireballs in a ferocious all-out attack. Karnov, fresh off of his exhilarating fishman battle, tries his luck against a tyrannosaur, a much more capable opponent. Being unfamiliar with the tyrannosaur's game, he gets owned, and in being so owned, becomes blue.
