To put a finer point on this, upzoning single-family neighborhoods would probably make a lot of homeowners wealthier by enhancing the value of the land underneath their homes. But it would also raise the specter of apartments (and maybe even non-white apartment-dwellers) on their block.
I don't think there's any plausible scenario in which a big spurt in homebuilding wipes out the wealth of incumbent homeowners, but that's not really what Trump is talking about when says he wants to protect property values. It's a segregationist dog whistle, always has been.

Don't get too excited. Certainly a better position than many others are taking, but Quigley is calling to replace ICE with a different organization that essentially does the same thing. There appears to be no fundamental change here.

I'd be fascinated to know how many productive hours LLMs have cost us in people spending time trying to turn them off rather than doing their jobs. I'm a software dev and I just spent 40 minutes trying to stop Outlook from rewriting my emails for me.

This goes out to the public.

Ask every elected official that represents you if they support ABOLISHING ICE.

Report back publicly.

If they can’t say that they want to ELIMINATE the fascist secret police that is kidnapping people? Get a new elected.

Wash.
Rinse.
Repeat.

This is the smartest thing I've read about the Venezuelan regime change effort.
16 hours in, my guess this was all intended basically as a coup to put VP Delcy Rodriguez in power (likely without her knowledge but 🤷).

At least for democracy & human rights, that might be even worse than the "opening shots in a war" scenario.

All speculation, but let me explain:

A Hampton Inn in Asheville just canceled my family's reservation because our address (incorrectly) showed Asheville—and the hotel bars locals within 50 miles.

When I asked why, they said, "because of our homeless population," adding that most hotels here have similar policies.

This is outrageous.

Speaking of "nano banana" AI slop from Google, my phone message app now has a banana button overlayed on every photo, asking me if I want to "remix" it.
Clicking through to "No thanks" doesn't make the "Remix" button go away.

It's so nice to be able to say "the data told you so." Time after time, you reduce car traffic and the area businesses benefit. But the next time it's proposed, it's always still "nooooo, nonono this will kill businesses!"
Foot traffic in the congestion pricing zone is up much more than elsewhere in the city. Some businesses worried it would reduce customers – but it seems like it’s done the opposite.

I came across *the* example I have been hammering with these food delivery robots.

A man with a mobility aid is forced to step aside because there is not room for him because the robot will not make room for a person (esp. those with a mobility aid who need addditional room)

One of the funniest things about car brain backlash is that it's self-defeating, almost masochistic.

Drivers get better outcomes from these changes but many of them can't see past their own nose and are committed to a in-group/out-group identity conflict.
DDOT continues to publish before/after analyses of safety projects. The numbers for the 9th street NW bike lanes suggest that we should be doing these projects everywhere we can. Crashes plummeted, pedestrian and bike traffic skyrocketed, and vehicle travel times dropped.

Now, at the time, we did that as a post for patrons only.

But you know what, let's make it public today. 🍾

NEW: ICE has finally released post-shutdown detention data. The latest data reveals that a full 40%(!) of people arrested in the interior and held in ICE detention have no criminal record; no criminal charges or prior convictions. That is up from just 4% when Trump took office.

Good morning. I've got a banger new post out today that develops a new method for placing voters on the left-right ideological spectrum, and adds a new, "non-ideological"/affordability axis to usual way we chart & think about US voters (esp swing voters). www.gelliottmorris.com/p/not-just-l...
Not just left vs right: Most voters think about affordability and material wellbeing, not in ideological terms
Most voters want a party that emphasizes cost of living issues and makes the world a better place. Few Americans think in solidly ideologically terms. "Moderates" are mostly non-ideological.

I love the logo that's clearly inspired by Cyberpunk 2077, the primary message of which is that corporate greed is unending to the point of literally taking our souls, and which contains a string of missions in which a group of AI taxis go insane and cause mayhem across the city. Just build trains.
