Notice that @aptshadow.bsky.social ’s Children of Time is 99p on kindle in the UK. If you have any interest in SF and haven’t read it, this is a no-brainer.

Sometimes I wonder if our many years of jokes about writers hating writing and doing anything but writing, etc, have convinced people that the writing part is the hurdle and the goal is just to have a thing in hand. But I am here to tell you: the writing is the best part. The act is the thing.

Knowing this episode was coming, together with the recent tribute anthology, motivated me to finally read Mythago Wood, and it was well worth it. Looking forward to hearing what you two have to say.

One of my all time favourite books, Holdstock’s great classic of British fantasy. Join us to see what Emma made of it!

This story is getting wilder - not only is it a known solitary spider species living communally, but it's cohabiting with a second species, a type of commensalism(?) not before observed. Would be very interested to see if the species are cooperating with weaving/hunting, and how that works.

This is another book that you absolutely should read. An amazing near-future setting with an even more amazing setting nested within it.
So it’s the tenth birthday of Midnight, a book that was nearly but not quite a lot of things. Happy birthday, little book. Still looking good.

Read WHO KILLED NESSIE? by Paul Cornell and Rachael Smith over lunch. Charming, cryptid muder-mystery, with real heart and real fortean knowledge in that John-Allison-adjacent space I always like to see. This is the Avery Hill edition, but I got the Zoop crowdfunder.

Today I finished the audiobook of @aptshadow.bsky.social 's Spiderlight. In spirit this mythic quest is Frankenstein's monster meets Good Omens. Bonus features include narration by the author - no nuance is overlooked - and a starring role for a most excellent spider. Highly recommended.
