It’s so much weirder than other Big Institutions destroyed by VC, because the Hudson m’s Bay Company essentially *created* the nation state of Canada. Survived for 355 years only for late capitalism to devour it. It’s so so so much more strange than Toys R Us or whatever.
minor drama:

a year ago, the historic Hudson's Bay Company was destroyed by venture capitalists, and they were the traditional olympic outfitter. The company was of course evil but they came around to acknowledging their history in their later years, and the 2018 olympic outfit was fire:

"they don't deserve our fear" is a profound thing to say imo & I'm grateful for it

distrust yes caution yes. fear God maybe (proverbs 9:10 though I have long-winded thoughts about the fear of God). these men terrorizing citizens may be a lot of things but they don't know the first thing about God
because they don’t deserve our fear

just saw someone sincerely arguing that they need AI bc they don't have "natural" artistic talent and idk how to make you understand that nobody comes by this shit naturally. it's just...work. it's being bad at it for a really, really, really long time. it's intention, pursued over time! wtf!!!

In truly knowing your audience our DM had a puzzle room for us today. For the group of college faculty, college librarian, and museum education director, he made a puzzle where we had to sort books into their proper locations. To say we were all in, is an understatement.

Evaluation is important and we have good ways of evaluating instructors (observations, audits, mentoring). But the evidence is clear that asking students to Yelp review their instructors the week before exams yields no valuable information on teaching or learning--just customer satisfaction.

I think this is the lesson. Take what you need from the material. Just don't give them money. THEY WILL BE FINE. THEY HAVE SO MUCH MONEY. In one case, enough money to do villain selfies on a yacht, drinking and smoking a cigar, telling the poors to suck it.
in the past (before their many harmful actions fully came to light) if you found comfort in work of NG or JKR, I don't judge that. Now, if you watch their shows, buy their work, buy merch, put a single additional dollar in their pocket or add to their power or influence in any way, that I do judge.

"If you hate GenAI you're going to have to stop playing new games when they all start using it"

My brother in Christ, my backlog is literally thousands of games long. I have lifetimes worth of earlier titles to play, & I will gladly do that instead of boiling the oceans for a new CoD or whatever

Today's complaint about the AI in education discourse: Too much of it is framed around a future that is going to happen to us, as opposed to seeing the future as something we may have some agency to shape. I reject the deterministic view of AI, particularly genAI. It's a tool, not our master.
